A Manifesto For A New Wakefield
TIMINGS AND LOCATIONS FOR SATURDAY 2ND JUNE FOR Long Division !
(Most are free and just require an explorer pass)
1. Alicia Wallace
Where: Warehouse 23
When: 18:30 – 19:30 (During Galaxians performance)
What: interactive performance using L.E.D. lights to trace the energy and movement of the crowd. This generates a live feed of illuminated gestures, becoming the stimulus for the visuals projected on stage.
**Pioneer pass required**
2. @.ac
Where: Elizabethan Gallery
When: 1pm – 5pm: ‘Anyone Can Play Guitar’
2pm – 3pm: Free Philosophy Seminar on Raoul Vaneigem’s ‘The Revolution of Everyday Life’
What: @.ac will be running a critical seminar / social sculpture outside the Elizabethan Gallery Wakefield, free and open to all. This will comprise of two main activities but the audience are free to suggest their own activities. Our overarching aim for the day is to kickstart a discussion about culture, politics, and The Manifesto For A New Wakefield.
3. Drawing the Crowd – illustrations by John Welding
Where: Mr & Mrs C’s
When: 10am – 4pm
What: Visit Mr & Mrs C’s to see a selection of John’s original drawings of Wakefield, ahead of John creating a series of live illustrations that will capture the energy, atmosphere and quirky moments of Long Division festival.
4. Local Colour – photography by Mark Ratcliffe
Where: Wakefield Beer Exchange
When: 11am – midnight
What: Mark has documented the people of Wakefield and neighbouring towns going about their daily lives. He brings together an array of local characters who represent the varying aspects of a fast changing community. Places photographed include Wakefield, Castleford, Pontefract, Featherstone and South Elmsall.
5. Are you becoming who you thought you were going to be? – Nicholas and Alexandra Vaughan
Where: The Art House (External Wall on Mulberry Way)
When: Anytime
What: As part of the larger project of “Grassy Slag Heaps”, taking place in Wakefield from September 2018, and in response to A Manifesto for a New Wakefield, Nicholas & Alexandra Vaughan takeover of an empty wall in town. On it, a long strip of etching, a landscape cross section of Wakefield, an artistic view travelling through its past, present, and future.
6. Visible Words From Invisible People – Richard Wheater
Where: 28 Wood Street, 24 Wood Street, 15 Cross Street and Bank Street
When: Anytime
What: Over a ten week period in 2012, a group from the city’s homeless community worked with artist Richard Wheater, on a project that aimed to develop their visual language through light, to communicate their predicament to the wider public. The results were a series of extraordinary neon signs. As part of Long Divisions ‘Manifesto for a New Wakefield’ these 4 signs are displayed in shop windows around Wakefield for a month.
7. Where Do We Go From Here? The Merry West Collective
Where/When:
12:00 – 12:15 – The Art House
13:00 – 13:15 – The Quarter Cafe Bar (upstairs)
13:45 – 14:00 – The Quarter Cafe Bar (upstairs)
15:00 – 15:15 – The Art House
What: Where Do We Go From Here? will consist of 2 short performances repeated throughout the day in familiar Wakefield City Centre locations. Each piece will bring a focus on pivotal moments of change in everyday situations. You are invited to gather round and watch and listen as conversations unfold and decisions are made.
8. Landed – Ali Bullivent and friends
Where/When:
12:00 – 12:15 – Elizabethan Gallery
12:45 – 13:00 – Wakefield Cathedral (outside)
13:30 – 13:45 – The Ridings (Garden food area on top floor)
14:10 – 14:25 – The Art House
What: A spoken word and soundscape part recorded part live performance inspired by stories, experiences and expectations of people who have found themselves in Wakefield from other lands.
9. Shout! Sister Shout! – Charlie Wells and friends
Where/When:
11:15 – 11:30 – Precinct stage
12:30 – 12:45 – The Ridings (Garden food area on top floor)
What: Charlie Wells wanted to create a space where female horn players could ‘shout out’ in harmony together. Loud, raucous and not at all polite, this music will lift your soul and set you up for a day exploring Long Division across the City.
10. Toria Garbutt
Where: Al’s Teamroom, Create Cafe, Duchniaks, Kirkgate Train Station, Mr & Mrs C’s
When: All Day
What: Toria has created a brand new series of poems inspired by the cafes and meeting places of Wakefield, the special places where world changing, revolutionary ideas can be formed over a cup of tea and a bakewell tart.
11. Capa College
Where: Wakefield Cathedral
When: 13:15 (during Thomas Ragsdale’s set)
What: Long Division have commissioned CAPA College students to create a new piece of contemporary dance to be performed at the festival. The work will be in response to and in partnership with musician Thomas Ragsdale with the overall performance taking place in the beautiful Wakefield Cathedral.
