Eddie’s lockdown tune of the day

Today’s Lockdown Track. Today we’re looking for your Joe Strummer at Cambridge stories. He was probably the headline booking which I agonised over the most. I’m a huge Clash fan, but didn’t want that to cloud my judgement, as it was his acoustic album Walker and the world influenced Mescaleros material that made me want him to appear. I was one of few promoters who didn’t want a Clash set. Anyway, his bus rolled in overnight and by chance we met around 4am backstage, where I tried to explain my reasoning and he quizzed me about the festival. I hadn’t been aware, but he’d bunked into the festival years previous, so knew what it was about. He re-named me Head Honcho, changed his own pass to read Director of Chaos and between checking out other artists, spent the next day siting with the crew outside Production Office, misdirecting arrivals and deliveries. This ended up being one of his last very last performances and fortunately the whole set was recorded. Here is White Man in Hammersmith Palais, complete with fiddle solo. The pic is a signed Polaroid showing his home-made pass.
