FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: Livestream Highlights: "You're Everything" by Chick Corea

The best festival listings calendar, previews, reviews, and photos

I wrote “You’re Everything” when I was sharing an apartment with Neville Potter in 1971. Neville had a day job, and I’d be working at night. So I’d write melodies and leave them for Neville on a cassette recorder. And I’d tell him “See if you could put some lyrics to this…” And he’d come back with a set of lyrics. We did that with a lot of tunes: with “Sometime Ago”, “500 Miles High” — other tunes of that era. It was a really good working relationship. We’ve remained friends through the years.

  1. Yes, sir. This is really tripping me out, because I watched The Fabulous Baker Boys (It's like Purple Rain to me) for the first time in like 20 years last night…

It was a turning point for Chick to move from the Steinway to Yamaha back in the late 80's or 90's? It fits his style. It's not as visceral, liquid and warm as Jarrett playing on a Steinway. At the same time it's incredibly crafted, everything in it's place, like a perfect puzzle. A profound musical intelligence.

Chick, we will miss you at the Hollywood Bowl this summer. Thank you for so much great music you have given us. I have almost all your recordings. I must have listened to 'Friends' more than any other till, 'Three Quartets', which I've listened to hundreds of times and still counting. 'Three Quartets', is my number one 'desert island' record to take with me. I saw the original Three Quartets band perform the entire record live at the Hollywood Bowl, which was an epic event. I hope to see you with Vinnie play live in concert some day before I die.
