The new festival regulars: who played everywhere in 2026, and how they got there

We sat down and counted every act we could find on 127 of our favourite festival line-ups from this year. And five of the busiest are bands we were tipping a year or two ago.

We went through the 2026 line-ups of the festivals we cover and logged every named act. That came to 8,644 acts and 11,962 billings across 127 events.

Eighty per cent of all those acts appear on just one bill.

Ninety-seven appear on six or more.

Near the top of that list are five bands I spent the last couple of summers telling people to go and see. I found GANS, Getdown Services, Lambrini Girls, Fat Dog and Kneecap at various festivals and gigs over the preceding years, and most found there way onto my ‘pick of the festivals t-shirts!

In 2026 GANS and Getdown Services are on 12 bills each, joint seventh in the whole list. Lambrini Girls are on 11, Fat Dog on 10 and Kneecap on nine. Only 27 acts reached nine or more, and all five are among them.

Plenty of other people were at those sets saying the same thing. What interests me is how they got from those first sets to here.

The top of the table

Florence Road lead with 16 billings. KEO, Westside Cowboy, Wolf Alice and Zara Larsson have 14 each, Madra Salach 13, then GANS and Getdown Services on 12. The Cure, CMAT and Lambrini Girls follow on 11.

Take out The Cure as the only ‘heritage act’ (and I use that phrase cautiously because they are far from a band relying on 30-year-old material) and most of the top of the table is bands on their first record, or still waiting to release one. Madra Salach’s debut album, Gorta, isn’t due until January 2027, and they still made 13 bills. Westside Cowboy won Glastonbury’s Emerging Talent Competition in 2025 and, with Glastonbury taking its fallow year, spent 2026 on 14 bills from Green Man to Paredes de Coura.

Reading and Leeds count as two entries in our data. Treat them as one and the order barely changes: Florence Road are still top, on 15.

Where my five turned up

Bearded Theory booked four of the five: GANS, Getdown Services, Lambrini Girls and Fat Dog. It also had Westside Cowboy, CMAT and Adult DVD. Deer Shed had three of the five. Truck, End of the Road, Boardmasters and Focus Wales had two each. Reading and Leeds had one between them, Kneecap. If you want to know which UK festivals were booking this crop of bands, look at the mid-sized independents rather than the giants.

After that the routes split. GANS and Fat Dog spent most of their summer at home. Eight of GANS’s 12 bills are in the UK, with Reeperbahn, Frequency, Haldern Pop and Eurosonic abroad. Fat Dog’s four European dates were Reeperbahn, Pinkpop, Dour and Croatia’s INmusic. Getdown Services split theirs seven at home and five away, with Roskilde, Pukkelpop and Øya among them.

Lambrini Girls went the other way. Eight of their 11 bills are abroad: Flow, Lowlands, Paaspop, Pukkelpop, Rock en Seine, Sziget, Way Out West and Øya. At home they (almost) played 2000trees, but did show at Bearded Theory and Boardmasters. That’s a Brighton band spending most of the summer out of the country.

Kneecap are working at a different level. Six of their nine are big European festivals, including Primavera, Rock Werchter, Roskilde and Open’er, with Reading, Leeds and Boomtown here. That’s a year after Hungary barred them from entering the country ahead of a planned Sziget set.

The Eurosonic route

The clearest route through our data starts at ESNS (Eurosonic Noorderslag), the Groningen showcase that opens the festival year every January. Acts who play it go into the European Talent Exchange, which puts them in front of about 130 partner festivals. Its first figures for 2026 counted 106 shows for 61 artists. Florence Road topped that list with nine.

The odds are long, though. We captured 186 acts at ESNS this year, and two-thirds of them don’t appear on any other bill we counted. Many will have played festivals at home that we don’t cover, but only four went on to nine or more other bills: Florence Road, KEO, GANS and Dove Ellis.

Florence Road and KEO show how it can work. Both played Eurosonic in January, then shared nine more bills over the summer: Reading, Leeds, Latitude, Truck, Y Not, Tramlines, Kendal Calling, Electric Picnic and Rock Werchter.

The Great Escape in Brighton does a similar job in May. KEO and Madra Salach both played it, and picked up 25 other bills between them.

Same total, different summer

Two acts with the same count can have had completely different years. Freddie Halkon’s seven bills are all in the UK: Boardmasters, Isle of Wight, Kendal Calling, Tramlines, Truck, Victorious and Y Not. Clipse also have seven, all on the continent. You could have seen one of them three times this summer and never come across the other.

Some acts stay inside one scene. PRESIDENT’s nine are mostly rock and metal events, from Hellfest and Wacken to Takedown. Jalen Ngonda crosses over, from Cheltenham Jazz, Love Supreme and Mostly Jazz to Mad Cool, Pukkelpop and Roskilde.

Moving up the bill

A billing count says nothing about where a band sits on the poster. Wolf Alice headlined Kendal Calling, Florence + The Machine headlined Reading and Leeds, and sombr was one of Sziget’s headliners. The act in this table who has made the move most clearly is CMAT: 11 bills, and her name at the top of End of the Road’s 20th-anniversary poster alongside Pulp and Mac DeMarco.

What the count can’t tell you

These figures measure demand from bookers, not from fans. They don’t tell you who stayed for the set, who bought a ticket because a band was playing, or whether the next tour sold better in towns where a band played a festival. An established act can draw more people at three events than a new band does at 15.

Mine right now are LEMONSUCKR, Bleech 9:3, and CHIMER.

About the figures

We used published 2026 line-ups for 139 events, 127 of which had named acts we could capture. Glastonbury was in its fallow year, and some events on the list (carnivals, Fête de la Musique) don’t publish a single line-up. A billing is a name on a published line-up, not a confirmed performance. Some line-ups are partial, which tends to favour bigger names, because headliners are the ones always listed. Reading and Leeds are counted separately, while Southside/Hurricane and Rock am Ring/Rock im Park are counted once. Showcase events such as ESNS, The Great Escape, Reeperbahn, Focus Wales, Sŵn and MaMA are included. The events we cover lean towards rock, indie and alternative festivals, which helps explain why guitar bands dominate the table. Dance acts in particular spend much of their summer at clubs and events outside this sample.
