NME Festival blog: why Reading and Leeds needs to overhaul its tradition of all-male headliners

Only one female-fronted act has headlined the festival in 20 years – a rewrite of gender representation at the top is long overdue

“The key thing about any festival is that you don’t stand still,” Melvin Benn, Festival Republic boss, told the BBC last year. “I’m very clear on that.”

So why have Benn and his Reading and Leeds Festival team signed off another imbalanced set of headliners? Revellers next…

The Guardian festival blog: Foo Fighters, the 1975, Twenty One Pilots and Post Malone to headline Reading and Leeds 2019 | Music

US rock band Foo Fighters will headline the Reading and Leeds festival for a fourth time in 2019. The veteran bill-toppers join three first-time headliners, British band the 1975 and Texan rapper Post Malone, who will co-headline a night with the Ohio group Twenty One Pilots.

Led by singer Matthew Healy, the 1975 have risen through the festival’s ranks since first appearing on the small Festival Republic stage in 2013. In 2016, they headlined the NME/Radio 1 stage.

The group will release their third album, A Brief Inquiry Into Online Relationships, on 30 November. Glowing early reviews have hailed the record as a millennial successor to Radiohead’s 1997 album OK Computer.

Post Malone’s headline slot marks his second appearance at the festival after he performed on the main stage this year. His second album, Beerbongs & Bentleys, was poorly received by critics but broke a number of streaming and chart records. The white…

NME Festival blog: Kylie Minogue rallies crowd at Leeds gig to sing ‘Neighbours’ theme tune

“That’s when good neighbours become good friends”

Kylie Minogue and her fans sang the Neighbours theme tune during a concert in Leeds yesterday (October 4).

As Digital Spy reports, the singer, who is currently on her ‘Golden’ tour, broke in to the song mid-way through her set, encouraging the audience to sing along.

Minogue starred in the long-running Australian soap from 1986 to 1988. She played a mechanic called Charlene who married Scott Robinson, played by her real-life boyfriend at the time, Jason Donovan.

The couple performed their 1988 hit, ‘Especially For You’, at Radio 2’s Live In Hyde Park last month.

In other news, the 50-year-old pop star has reportedly been confirmed for the 2019 Glastonbury Legends slot.

The rumours come 14 years after she was forced to scrap a huge headline slot following a breast cancer diagnosis.

Glastonbury insider told The Sun in September: “Kylie had to pull out of Glastonbury in 2005 just a month before she was due to appear so this performance will be a very emotional and poignant moment for her.

NME Festival blog: What Reading & Leeds first-timers thought of 2018’s festivals

Your first festival is a very special experience. My first festival saw me travel four hours only to find that we’d forgotten to pack the poles to our tent. I eventually ended up face down in a field after downing an entire box of wine.

Reading and Leeds Festival is, for many, the first taste of a true festival blow-out. And this year was no exception. We’ve trawled through the socials to bring you the hot-takes from the festival…
