Saturday at Glastonbury Festival 2022

Festivals and gigs. A listings calendar, plus previews, news, reviews, and photos

As Saturday at Glastonbury 2022 draws to an end could we be seeing a festival weekend that has the most perfect weather ever?

We have been at every Glastonbury Festival except one since 1993 and have seen every weather varient that the British Summer can throw at a field full of festival goers.

And if we are not mistaken (and if the forecast for tomorrow looks like holding firm) it seems that 2022 might well set a record for being the best weather the festival has ever experienced.

It’s shaping up to be a true ‘Goldilocks year’ – not to hot, not too cold, not too wet, not too dry.

There has been enough sunshine so that when you finally get that first post-Glastonbury bath you’ll find proper festival tan lines marking where your wristband and lanyard were blocking the UV.

The temerature rarely dropped below a comfortable point on the thermometer… with the possible exception of a couple of hours this evening, but it wasn’t anything too dramatic.

The rain did come – but only in the form of the odd light shower. And that had the benefit of damping down the ground so that dust never became a significant issue.

If there was a single complaint I heard the whole weekend regarding weather matters it was from mainstream media photographers who’s only brief (it seemed) from their editors was ‘get pictures of girls in bikinis covered head to foor in mud.’

Bad luck guys – no such photo opportunities this year.

But whilst the weather comes and goes, some of the bands just keep on getting better and better.

Skunk Anansie

Skin decided to go a little bit Grace Jones with her choice of spikey festival headgear this year – the black inflatable wig contrasting starkly with her conservatively cut (if luridly lime) business suit.

And she seriously got down to business – laying down a set we heard people talking about for the rest of the weekend.

Peat and Diesel

Are they the first band from the far-flung Western Isles of Scotland to play at Glastonbury festival?

The guys reckon they are – and who would argue with these three weather-hardened celtic ‘nips?

Truth be told they nearly didn’t get to thsie first set at The Bimble Inn today – and even when they did it nearly got cut short.

Bad directions and even more badly-briefed stewards saw them getting to The Park three times, only to be turned away each time, before finally amking it through to the Bimble Inn just in the nick.

And then, just a couple of songs in the house amp decided to let them down… leading to the longest accodian note in history and a hurried run to the van to drag the trusty team Marshall 4×12 onto the stage to save the day and delight the crowd with a storming set that put a smile on every face.

Is it any surprise these guys sold out the 7,000 capacity Barrowlands in a day on their first vist just two years ago?

We predict HUGE things for the band in the future… get on board now.

Bob Vylan

We have been keeping an eye on Bob Vylan since they featured on the Kid Kapichi banger ‘New England’.

New England

At the time we said it would become a summer anthem for Kid Kapichi – but tonight it’s the centrepiece of Bob Vylan’s Truth Stage set.

It’s late in the night (or early in the morning depending on your perspective) but energy levels are as high in the crowd as they are on the stage and we are blown away by the way that Bob Vylan have made the rapid step up from a sweaty 150-capacity room in a basement in Hastings, via the woodland stage at Bearded Theory to this Glastonbury platform in just a matter of months.

Self Esteem

“There is nothing that terrifies a man more than a woman that appears completely deranged…”

Which means that the male half of the huge John Peel Stage Glastonbury audience must have been quaking in its Boots (deliberate nod there to Self Esteem’s last Glastonbury costume choice) as Rebecca Lucy Taylor took full possession of proceedings – dressed in what was apparently an outfit modelled on the shopping centre in her home town of Sheffield.

Go figure!

Tom McQ

We love it when other people act as our eyes and ears, especially late at night – so thankyou to Matt Miles of Dead Horse Bay for this 2am spot on the Mandala Stage:

Tom McQ is a vintage vision plucked from the free love era and beamed into the modern age with an iconic and unforgettable sound. It’s 2am and still the dagger sharp dance moves and wickedly woven guitar hooks pound out a swelling heart song that surges in the audience just as passionately as it does with the man on stage.

Sister Suzie

For the second year in a row (with time off for COVID behaviour) Sister Suzie held court in the Rocket Lounge with a late-night residency spanning three consecutive nights … plus a guest appearance with Craig Charles on the next-door Truth Stage this afternoon.

The North-Eastern lass and her Hastings band of talented musicians deliver proper swingin’ rock’n’roll that is as infectious as the latest Omicron varient…but much more fun!

Hobo Jones and the Junkyard Dogs / Beans on Toast

It actually wouldn’t be a festival – let alone Glastonbury – without a back-to-back dose of Hobo Jones and the Junkyard Dogs and Beans on Toast.

Both are festival institutions warranting blue plaques at every stage they play, and both simply need describings as ‘if you know, you know…’

Glastonbury 2022 – Saturday photo gallery

Our Saturday experience was near-on perfect, taking us from one side of the site to the other from Noon to 3am. Hopefully this photo gallery does the day some justice!
