REDDIT FESTIVAL NEWS What’s up with festivals suddenly adding “additional camping” at the last minute?

Festivals and gigs. A listings calendar, plus previews, news, reviews, and photos

This year I’ve seen Shambhala add “last minute” lodging and tickets like a week before the fest, when it had been sold out for months. Today I see that Lost Lands is doing the same thing with “limited glamping spots that just opened up.”

Anyone familiar with festival logistics able to explain how this is possible? How can spots “suddenly become available” when the tickets have presumably been sold out for months and tickets aren’t returnable? Are they being deceitful/scammy and secretly saving tickets for the last minute so that they can create a hype/panic for last minute buyers? Did they realize they needed more money and decide to just add more spots than they originally planned for/had room for?

  1. A lot of it could be payment plans that lapsed and now those tickets and passes have become available. They looked at the numbers and figured they could fit a few more people in. Maybe some more camping space opened up. Could be alot of things.

It’s when people default on their payment plans. Maybe you miss the second payment, maybe you missed the final one; doesn’t matter. Any tickets not paid for will generally hit the market from the first party vendor after the grace period for the final payment ends.

Sometimes it’s payment plans falling through but if it’s this close it’s because they have already started to setup the festival and have found a way to squeeze in a few more then they just put them up for sale last second

  4. i emailed Lost Lands because i ended up using the “official ticket exchange” to get a quiet car camping pass, as they were sold out on the Lost Lands site. so i end up paying $365 through the official ticket exchange (on a website called Lyte), anyway a few days later, the Lost Lands website suddenly is selling additional quiet car camping passes for $150. when i emailed the festival basically asking WTF, they said it’s bc of people defaulting on their payment plans and they have “no control” over the ticket prices on Lyte. even though it’s their “official ticket exchange”. i’m just interested to know who is getting that extra $200. cause i’m sure the people who sold their tix back through the exchange prob didn’t make a profit

  5. Payment defaults are main thing but also they could just add more space to the venue layout. Lost lands camping is really just in a big ass grass field, same with Glamping. They can just expand it.

  6. There’s a ton of reasons this could be a thing.

A lot of staff and artists have guest lists allocated. Those list spots are usually due about a week before the event. Maybe they didn’t all get used and now they have some extra room.

Maybe they were on site, laid everything out and realized there was room to fit a little bit more.

Maybe some of their staff was originally going to be camping and decided to share RVs instead. Conversely, maybe they had extra room designated for some RVs that decided to camp which freed up some room.

Maybe they did a ticket audit (it’s actually way more complicated to get the exact number of attendees including staff, volunteers, artists, guests, ticketholders, police, medic, etc are going to actually be on site until the last minute) and realized they had less people than they thought.

There are SO MANY variables here and it’s really impossible to say. But every extra ticket they can sell, especially during a sold out event, is literally just more money in their pocket so theyre going to do their best to fit as many people as possible while staying within the legal and safety limits that have been imposed.

  7. I think they add more camping so more people can camp. Just a guess though. SMDH.

  8. Former festival box office director. Other than defaulted payment plans that a few people mention, these are most likely released holds: X amount of campsites held back for vendors/sponsors/talent guestlists that are held in advance and released close to the event if not claimed. This is also why many sold out club shows will still have some tickets available at the door.

  9. It’s not unusual for a third party to rent the available space to provide additional glamping. Usually happens sooner than the week before, but it can be quite late.

  10. If ticket sales are good, and demand maintains, more campaign services will be booked

  11. They plan to have X number of camping spots. These require staff, portapotties, etc. Ticket sales are very good, and the venue has more space they were not originally planning to use. Add staff, portapotties, etc., now you have more camping. Not every event is packing the venue to the max. Also payment plan defaults as others have said.

Those advertisements look a bit sketchy but that’s probably because of the “glamping”. But could also be that they found some neighbors willing to give them extra space when the organizers are already there.

  13. Could just be a marketing strategy

  14. Get ready for oversold camping and tight quarters. It’s been the theme of fests since 2020. Money recuperation.

  15. Lyekkat says:

Shambhala also demolished some trees to make room for more camping.

  16. Idk if I’m gonna make it this year and it breaks my heart

  17. Instead of payment plans. It’s likely due to those clearing new trails/volunteers opening a lot more areas accessible than anticipated. I’m sure it differs per festival. I haven’t seen it locally.

  18. djynot says:

Payment plan fails. New area opening up around the festival. Land owner allowing the use of land for $ in their pockets.

People probably cancelled after seeing what happened at other festivals. E-zoo blue ridge.

  20. If secret dreams is anything to go by—they oversold the event past initial estimates and then added more camping to accommodate for $$$ — ADA was partially behind the fucking portas this year and they almost ran out of room (illegal)

I’d say they also do it this way to create artificial scarcity. Gives attendees a “We gotta get our camping now guys!” instead of waiting to the last minute mindset. Probably a bit of both.

  21. Guess you aren’t used to going to concerts “sold out” never means “sold out”

  22. Default on payment plans. That’s how I got my first tickets to electric forest in 22
