I knew it was going to be bad the year I went when I saw the cops posted on top of the hotel with massive binoculars. They send in the ground units when they think they’ve got someone.

Gotta feel bad for the only person caught trying to buy there.
Police at the festival should be protecting the festival goers safety not policing in a predatory way. I’m not sure what one does here? reach out to the city council and police department? stop supporting local Alabama festival?
There has to be a balance here for people to let loose and expressive without having this be the state. It makes me very sad because we have enough restraints and stress in our normal lives.

I remember this particular festival I went to, it was the evening of the second night, the sun was setting, and there was a dead tribute band playing. If you were looking at the stage, and turned to your right, there were two uniformed police officers making there way towards main stage area. The band broke into playing “Shakedown Street”, and all the vendors closed up shop, and everyone on Shakedown Street at the time merged into the crowd at main stage. Nothin shakin on Shakedown Street….
Only 1 for theft? Guarantee there were more than 1 phone thief out there.

How do you get public intoxication at a music festival? Super whack and not the vibe….
By far the toughest security I have ever witnessed at a festival/concert in my life. Cops were predatory and profiled festival goers. I had cleared security with no problem each day but had cops research my bag and body.
Sounds Like Gulf Shores is a place to Avoid!! Now Talledega is Always a total $hit Show when Anything goes!!
I attended the festival and the cops were extremely strict. My boyfriend is fully tatted and every time we went through security they pulled him aside and gave him a full pat down and they asked him if he had anything on him. They never found anything, he’s a good guy but they assumed since he had so many tattoo’s that he was “high risk” or some shit!
Let’s see how 3 nights of Phish right next door goes this weekend.
The only good part about Hangout was living nearby and going two weeks early to bury all of your liquor and other supplies in the sand.
Just returned a few weeks ago from beale St. Music fest in Memphis. I haven’t been to a festival in the South, I could not believe the amount of police presence. I assumed if there were that many in public there were probably as many undercover. I didn’t even smoke I was so paranoid. Needless to say I won’t be going to anymore festivals in the South ever again.
It’s always been like this. The last year I went I had my car towed, went to the lot and police had seized an old van that a few people had brought to camp in (at a campsite.) took away their only means of transportation, arrested them in another state, and ruined their weekend over some pot. ACAB.
i went this year and in 2015, honestly the police presence was way worse back then. i didn’t have any issues but i also took precautions and chose the most discreet version of everything

They had this shit going down in 2016 too. This will continue to happen until people take action.
You think this is bad, just wait to see what happens in a few weeks in Tennessee at bonnaroo. Tennessee is fucking horrible about controlled substances. You can get a ticket just for having test kits for drugs. Dont even think about bringing plane B either. I love bonnaroo but fuck Tennessee!

My first year at imagine was 2019 and walking through the food vendors tents looking for something to eat I saw a place that was selling juices or something healthy I don’t really remember; but before I could fix my mouth to ask a question about the product the guy said: “Man you know where I can get some bud, can you help me out…”
My spidey sense was tingling as I looked this dude over. He was a sons of anarchy Jax looking dude with a beard and I was super sketched out by the dude because i know he only said that cause of my appearance and hair. I was feeling good and even though it was sus I wanted to fuck with him just to see what he would say; So I said “I don’t but my friend Deez does and i can just send him your way.”
“What else do he have. I could just give you the cash and you could get it, I’m here working at this spot and I just need to smoke, I haven’t smoked all day”
I couldn’t believe the shit I was hearing and told him “yeah I’ll just send him bro” and peaced out of there so fast.
I went to meet back up with my friends and get food as I told them about that sus encounter I had with the vendor. They wanted to see him, so we walk past and I see him yukking it up with some actual cops in the back of their canopy.
I was arrested walking into the festival the first day. Was one of the first people. It was absolutely ridiculous. I was pulled aside for secondary search. As I was walking away and good to go the cuffed for a baggie on the ground next to me. I had to wait in a tent for 6 hours waiting on 12 people to get arrested so they could ship us up to the fucking prison an hour away. After 8 hours of being in cuffs… 9 pm…. Bail bonds close at 10…they final let me get my phone to call and they lost it. Along will my whole wallet, Fanny pack, and camelback. I got bailed out by a friend right before going to gen pop. Went to festival the next day to try to track it down and the cop said he remembered and he gave it to my friends who was so drunk we lost it….. we were completely sober. Trying to charge with my a class a schedule 1 felony….. court is on the 13th. Wish me luck. #fuckbama

Went to Hangout in like 2008 or so. Watched undercovers bust three dudes near me at the late night pretty lights set. Great fest, bad cop vibes. Would not go back

Hangout is Baldwin County’s little piggy bank. It’s a little cottage industry they’ve got going there between the defense attorneys, county court, and of course the county’s LEO’s. At this point it should be assumed that Hangout (and its producers) are fully complicit in the take.

I just hate the war on drugs style of legislation and enforcement, so ridiculous to give someone a criminal record for possessing a personal amount of a controlled substance, which I’ll guess represents a majority of the drug-related arrests on this list.
Though to be honest, having just come back from Hangout I’m a little bit surprised by these numbers. Cops were hanging out at the festival gates which isn’t totally atypical for festivals, but they really did not have much of a presence patrolling around inside the main grounds. The atmosphere inside was as free-for-all as any other festival in my experience, and I only saw maybe couple of incidents of anyone dealing with security at all. Of course, this is all anecdotal, and a shitty cop is probably going to target folks that look a little more bohemian than my friends and me.
Please someone tell me they filmed the cops harassing people. This needs to go viral.

I went to Hangout in 2011 for my first festival. I will never forget watching the cops make fun of and ignore people as they were asking where to find water refill at the late night shows, and then watching them heckle and cat call women to take their tops off and flash them. The image of them sitting on a wall together laughing it up and harassing women is burned into my memory forever.

What the fuck is this predatory shit. Aren’t the police there to protect the festival goers? Not slap people with hefty fines for having fun and letting loose? This is so frustrating.

Over 1,000 phones were stolen off of peoples bodies. Literally had their Fanny packs on the front of them and still stolen. So.. as a local.. I’m of the opinion there needed to be a stronger police presence. Go to Chicago and see how self policing works.. or just look at the example of people using shopping carts.. no threat of arrest or fine so people don’t do it.
In 2019 387 people were arrested at bonaroo and that’s the best music festival I’ve ever been to. Just stop being a fucking idiot it’s not that hard. If you’re going to do drugs do it at the hotel before you go or be better at not doing illegal things. You know Alabamas laws and by no means would I live in bama but cmon
