really good article. jam bands are definitely listened to differently than most music, it is some kind of special event. but i think everyone can “get them” after seeing a show on acid.

That last line is too relatable considering I just drove 4 hours on Tuesday to see Phish and got back for my exam at 10:30 am the next morning

  3. Haha did not expect to open that article and read about Chucks Farm. I made my way out there one of my years at Penn State. Definitely a fun time

  4. I think people listen to the song as a whole instead of hearing the interplay between instruments and differentiating them. There all playing different or similar tunes but it goes well when put together as awhole(most times).

Word of mouth does wonders for jam bands, and it isn’t just the small festivals either; everyone I asked for recommendations at Bonnaroo told me to see Pigeons Playing Ping Pong. Good set, but 10 tabs make finding the stages at Roo into a hippy version of Who’s on First.

  6. this is one of the first times in my life I can say “I was there!”

When it comes to small regional festivals with no security in the middle of nowhere, Chuck’s Farm was a magical place. I’m sure someone will say “there’s still festivals like that out there if you’re in the know” but I’m guessing they are short-lived and few and far between. I think you’d need a time machine back to the mid 2000s the recreate the fun we used to have.

  7. This is actually a really interesting article. I’ve never really looked at the jam band scene from an outside perspective. I was always very much into the crowd and scene, so for some reason I never really bothered to guess why someone *wouldn’t* be into it. I just maybe ignorantly assumed if only everyone could experience it the right way they’d get down.
