With all that is going on, we missed that at the end of May it was 10 years since Escobar closed in Wakefield.
Maybe it isn't such a big landmark (we didn't notice it discussed elsewhere) but we enjoyed looking back at the "obituary" written by our director for Rhubarb Bomb, the zine that birthed us.
The potential closure of venues is at the forefront of our minds right now. The closure of Escobar didn't seem to present an immediate threat; the article closes with positivity that all it kickstarted would go on to grow and that's true. Within a year the first Long Division took place.
But in a place like Wakefield, where the infrastructure was so fragile, it only took a nudge here and there for the house of cards to come crashing down and the city is in a vastly weaker position now that it was ten years ago.
It's something we are determined to tackle and the last ten years have proved that an annual festival is not enough to do that. The funding and projects that open up if we make it through the current climate are just the tip of the icebarg, so if you can support us, please do.
