When Greenbelt was an emerging, 15 year-old event – focussed on developing its reach and strengthening its roots – the idea of turning 50 probably would have made us think: “WOW, that’s old!”

Almost half a century later, as we stretch with excitement into our 50th year of artistry, activism and belief we feel as energised and – dare we say? – as youthful as ever. Like a lot of folk discover when they reach 50; we’re actually still really young at heart.

We can’t wait to celebrate our big five-decades-birthday with you this August. And we promise that, just like in the 80s when we were just 15, you’ll be spoilt for choice, surprised by some of the bookings we’ll make, and so much more comfortable than those spartan 80s campsite days.

  1. The 15-year special was my first. (Lured by the attraction of Amy Grant.)

Don’t suppose you have a shot of the rest of the article?

  2. Arkle Bell says:

This must have been when Caesar Molebatsi and I first met. I did a short video interview with him, which I used in the Youth Centre and school assembly.
Still good friends, since then Graham Cyster and Frank Chikane, both also Greenbelt speakers, all at Greenbelt and in their South African homeland.

  3. Paul Rock says:

Great lineup too – I remember it well.

  4. I remember that one well. I was there and working as a steward

  5. Katty Rice says:

    Ha! I went in 1997 1998 and 1999.

1998 was the best though as me and my best friend went and it was the first time I’d been away without adults accompanying!!
    I was 16 and he was 18 or 19.

    We were fed.
Spiritually and litteraly!, we set up our tents and settled down to a pot noodle and there was a lovley couple with a wee toddler set up next to us and they took pitty on our potnoodles and fed us! The next night the people the other side fed us! It was brilliant!

I had almost felt worried not having my mum or anyone with us but it turns out the greenbelt family is family to everyone!! Good Times! I remember seeing skelleg for the first time that year! It was such a good good time! 😀

Congratulations on turning 50! 😀 long may it continue! 😀

  6. I was there and will God willing be there to celebrate 50 years. It does make you wonder where the years went weren’t things supposed 9nly to get better?🤔🙏🏽🕯️

  7. We were there also, pleased it’s still a great yearly event

  8. I went to the first one at my uncle and aunts farm in Charsfield

  9. Sally Rice says:

I remember it well you told us all about it So so glad you went happy times xxx

  10. That Amy Grant gig was great.

  11. I remember going to the first one I think 1973.. We travelled form Otley in Yorks though Otley in Suffolk to Charsfield I think it was.. Oh… then there were the toilets…

  12. I was there in 1988! Magical memories from Greenbelt Festival. I really hope I can come again someday. Not been able to go since 1990.

  13. I was there with Mat Lucas. If I remember correctly it was the proclaimers, deacon blue, mike peters of the alarm, cliff richard and a side show of Griff Pilchard lol. What ever happened to him???? ‘I have got a hammer hammer’ and ‘where all frogs and we like mud’.

  14. That was my very first Greenbelt, and I went all by myself. And met Rachel Morris that year, a gift for which I continue to be incredibly grateful.
