Today we’re sharing a powerful talk from Sahar Vardi, an Israeli who refused military service and was imprisoned in 2008. Today she’s an activist based in Jerusalem, and in this 2017 Greenbelt talk ‘Israel, its Military, and Us’, she probes militarism in Israeli society.

How are children taught to become soldiers? What does a militarised economy look like and how is it exported? And what does this have to do with the UK?

We chose this talk to share before the murder of George Floyd and the Black Lives Matters global protests that followed. There is a link, of course. Under occupation, the Palestinians are ‘policed’ militarily. And the military mindset and methodology that Israel has perfected is now exported around the world.

Most police forces in the United States now bear at least some of the operational hallmarks of the IDF, in a vicious circle of funding support feeding into expertise being exported. The globalisation of new forms of colonialisation and occupation are designed to systematically maintain the status quo, to keep control.
