The last (but by no means least) hero we’re highlighting in our series for LGBT+ History Month, chosen by our ‘Out at Greenbelt‘ volunteer team, is Carol Stone.
Carol was the first trans priest in The Church of
England. She transitioned in 2000, taking a short time away from work and then returning to her parish in Swindon, where she was greatly loved and admired. Always reluctant to be in the spotlight, Carol seemed happiest ‘getting on with the job’. We invited her on several occasions to preside at our Outerspace eucharist at Cheltenham, but each time she politely declined, in part because her congregation, having seen her exposed to brutal media attention in the past, were so protective of her. Carol died in 2014, at the age of 60; she’s much loved, missed, and remembered, and in her own way remains a quiet inspiration.
