Sleep token draws such a range of comparisons to try to describe them, grasping at straws as none ever truly are sufficient comparisons of course (even if you can see where they’re coming from) but I saw one comparing Vessel to Ian Curtis (??) and Trent Reznor (maybe the scary horny lyricism?) but their shows prove he’s no Ian Curtis…the lighting would trigger an immediate epileptic seizure. Seems their light show has improved somewhat with timing & contrast but also increased in intensity. I don’t understand how they can move around on stage in masks to that particular light play. Even just watching it for me at a virtual distance is a bit much. Is it trying to accomplish further obfuscation of their stage identities? Increase disorientation? It’s a bit excessive with the strobing. Light doesn’t always have to do things rapidly to be interesting😂a lot of concerts these days have a poor, unsophisticated understanding of lighting. So many stage set ups need help though not just Sleep Token, most of metal…Bad Omens is even worse in terms of how terribly uninteresting their stage is. Nothing to do with the bands, they can have a bare stage and still kill it as they do in daytime festivals. But when a stage set up is not well thought out, it’s harder to ignore as you find yourself asking why even bother if it’s gonna be like that. Please metal bands, look into more art history of scenic stage design or something. Every time I see them I wish the stage could better catch up with the sound.
