Gig Harbor SINGS! Festival Highlights – Thank you City of Gig Harbor!
On the weekend of September 21-22, 2019, ninety youth singers (ages 5-18) gathered at Chapel Hill Church in Gig Harbor, WA to work with Spectrum Choral Academy’s artistic staff in a choir rehearsal/workshop setting. The entire event was free to the community and sponsored by the City of Gig Harbor Arts Commission Creative Endeavors Grant.
Younger singers (grades K-5) learned five songs during their two hour rehearsal. Older singers (grades 6-12) learned ten songs during their six hour rehearsal. The repertoire exposed singers to a variety of languages/genres/styles and included three pieces with choreography/dancing! We also worked on breathing techniques, vocal placement, creating a quality/blended sound and following a musical score. It is amazing what these young people accomplished – and how incredible they sounded – in such short time. All singers returned the second day for a brief dress rehearsal, followed by a free formal style concert for their families, community members and invited guests.
