FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: Airborne lions! (#3) | Hong De lion dance | Heritage Festival 2019

Festivals and gigs. A listings calendar, plus previews, news, reviews, and photos

These are highlights from the pedestal lion dance performance by Hong De Athletic and Cultural Association (加拿大弘德文化體育會) at the Chinese Pavilion during the Edmonton Heritage Festival 2019 in the 3:30 pm time on Aug 5. This was their 3rd pedestal performance of the festival. I edited out some slower parts and a couple of falls to shorten the viewing time. Julian is playing the head in the orange lion, with Alex as his tail. The red lion is played by Martin and Mason. The acrobatic pedestal routine is definitely spectacular and quite exciting to watch.
It was windy every day at the festival, which made the pedestal routine more difficult than it already is. It is hard to see under the lion costume, and the lion players have to pretty much do their jumps from physical memory established during intensive practice. The wind pulls at the lion costumes and makes balancing and jumping extra challenging. There were a few falls during the 3 days of the festival, but fortunately, no serious injuries occurred. Kudos to the players for their perseverance and courage!
