  1. If I didn't already believe in God, Bach would make me a believer. I had a teacher at the Manhattan School of Music when I was a graduate student there in the 1980's who used to say: "there's no bad Bach; just some that's less great." Most of it IS great!

  2. This is a master piece in music AND in theology. The choir has to play the bad guys by singing the demand of the evil crowd demanding the crucifiction of Jesus Christ.
The key to understand Bach's theology is the song "Herzliebster Jesu, was hast du verbrochen" (Dearest Jesus, which crime have you commited?) composed by Johann Crüger 1640 in Berlin. Bach is using parts of this piece in several works like the Johannes-Passion and the Matthäus-Passion. In the 3rd verse it says: "Was ist doch wohl die Ursach solcher Plagen? Ach, meine Sünden haben dich geschlagen; ich, mein Herr Jesu, habe dies verschuldet, was du erduldet." (What is the cause of this hardship? Oh, my sins have beaten you; I, my Lord Jesus, have caused, what you have endured) This is a reference to Isaiah 53 Verse 5: "he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed."
Bach is going a step farther: it is us who demand the death of Jesus Christ on the cross.

  3. Such an excellent music in such an excellent performance! When I finished the listening I just could think "No matter if I had to die right now, for this would be the last thing I'd have heard in my life". I can´t imagine a better end than the lullaby tone of "Ruht wohl…Ruht wohl, und bringt auch mich zur Ruh´." I am not a believer, so I don't want my sins to be forgiven just before my death in order to reach God in heaven…I just want to listen to music such as this because I´m sure that way I will be able to reach Bach wherever he is…Thanks to all members of AAM for almost two hours of such fine pleasure and delight!!!
    Soli Bach Gloria
