Last year we came home from Latitude with one band lodged firmly in our heads.
Scustin.
Out of Bray in Ireland, Scustin sit somewhere between funk and indie guitar punk.
And if one other Irish band similar comes to mind, it’s Republic of Loose… who are sadly missed, but burned fiercely for a few fleeting years.
Imagine you have walked into a pub in deepest Dublin and got into a late night talk with a bunch of chancer locals, each with their own Guiness-soaked philosophy on life and a story or two to tell…all to a dance-able backing-track of tight drums, crisp guitars, and outstanding bass rhythms.
Larry is the perfect frontman… and chatting to him after the show he described how he approaches every set with a fresh idea and a new perspective so that no two gigs are quite the same.
Tonight he began the show disembodied from the band as he started to talk to the crowd via a distant radio mic before eventually emerging from one of the caravan stalls that circle the woodland Trailerpark Stage at Latitude.
What followed was just what we love about festivals… a rip-roaring celebration of live music, where 90 percent of the audience have no idea what to expect, but are immediately drawn into a tight-knit family who become life-long fans of their new favourite band.
More photos to come… but here’s a taster… and a little video of the audience participation moment…
Festival bookers beware… ignore Scustin at your peril.
