  1. I’m here. This festival marks my fifth (camping) festival. I arrived in Wednesday after a ten hour drive.

I’m only really disappointed by the fact that an entire day was cancelled after the rain had stopped for good. We had several hours of sun before they came out and said it was cancelled. I was seriously baffled by that decision, probably the most odd decision I’ve seen come from an event organizer I’m almost convinced they are just trying to cash out insurance.

I’m not a metal or rock head, I listened to a lot of Disturbed in my middle school days along with whatever was popular on the local rock radio station. I’m mainly here for my girlfriend and experiencing a new vibe. All that to say I came in with zero expectations and an open mind.

I knew nothing about the rock community and while my girlfriend bought her ticket instantly I only bought mine a couple weeks ago right as they were selling out. I was a little scared, I guess, of what metal heads were like but that was before I tried to learn about metal and the rules to moshing and generally following the metal community. These people are the kindest, most open hearted and genuine people I’ve experienced an event with. I try and interact with my neighbors and the local area around me at every festival, but here it was almost like everyone I met was ready to make a friend. I’ve been fed extravagantly, with nothing to offer but my company and some advice. Neighbors of my neighbors have given or offered food, before the shit hit the fan. I walked past a camp after the Thursday chaos that was slinging hotdogs for a line of people.

I think a lot of people failed because they simply did not prepare. You know what you won’t find next to the piles of ruined shelters, the one that that could’ve prevented a lot destruction, tent stakes. I won’t deny Thursday was a freak storm, but rain was predicted for the weekend and when all it takes it’s cordage and stakes to prepare for the worst then why not bring them? A lot of people didn’t expect rain in the Nevada playa but look what happened.

There’s still a lot of people here having a lot of fun, drinking and cooking off what they have left. There’s three camps I can see from mine that I could join for a beer and a hotdog or just some good conversation. Everyone that’s still here going into Sunday is a real one.

  2. Every year they have some different form of shitshow but it usually turns around by the last few days and is a pretty great time.

I’m very glad I didn’t go this year. I have friends there and I’ve been getting details each day. Sounds pretty grim but if they actually follow through with refunds, then canceling the rest of the weekend is actually the best thing that could’ve happened. Otherwise people would have a very hard time disputing their charges.

It seemed like an isolated weather problem, which can happen at any festival, but they dropped the ball on planning for the worst. I heard that quite a bit of their staff just walked off because of the conditions.

I was originally telling people on social media to chill, wait it out and that things would get better, but I was very wrong. Kinda feel like an asshole in retrospect. I really hope people actually get refunded.

This is the dumbest shit I ever heard it didn’t even rain yesterday after 2 or today

  4. Crutch02 says:

Weather my ass. Anyway, 3rd year going and there won’t be a 4th.

  5. That whole statement is a lie. They treated their stage hands like shit so they all quit. Good luck with your refunds.
