New talent to be nurtured at Beverley Folk Fest

Festivals and gigs. A listings calendar, plus previews, news, reviews, and photos

Beverley Folk Festival will once again feature a wealth of exciting young singers, musicians and performers, offering chance to see the stars of tomorrow, today.

Chairman Matt Snowden commented, “The festival takes great pride in working to develop new young talent and 2017 will be no exception. To keep the tradition alive we recognise that we have to pass the baton of creativity to the next generation of artists”.

The Beverley Folk Festival has two important youth arms…the ‘Westwood Sessions’ and the acclaimed ‘Area 2’.

Nikki Airey, a young musician in her own right, works hard to coordinate and organise the ‘Westwood Sessions’ for those aged 11 to 25. The object is to give young talent a stage to perform on and to create a group of friends who can foster, care and develop each others performance skills.

In Nikki’s own words “By working together and supporting each other we build a team spirit and help giving each other confidence.  Getting up to perform is a difficult thing but with the support of friends anything is possible”.

The ‘Westwood Sessions’ will be there in force in June running open mic sessions and offering a CD recording facility. For only £5 artists can book a slot and cut their own CD.

Area 2 is organised by professional musician and East Yorkshire lad Sam Pirt.

Sam has a deep love of music and performance and has a keen interest in developing young musicians to the next level. Drawing not only from the local area but also nationwide ‘Area 2’ will give some great young talent the opportunity to perform on a festival stage. Sam commented,  “As a touring musician I see and hear a lot of young talent around the country. The ‘Area 2 ‘ stage in Beverley gives me the opportunity to showcase exciting and innovative musicians. These musicians really are the voice, sound, and future of live music, innovative, creative and above all talented. It is a privilege to help them and to work with them”.
