Traditionally played only by men, the Kora is a West African instrument synonymous with exclusivity patriarchy. Until now. Sona Jobarteh has taken the Kora and made it her own, becoming the first woman to take up this iconic instrument. She also fights hard for women’s rights and has singlehandedly built up and financed a school for Gambian children to preserve her musical heritage for later generations. Performing all over the world, her captivating voice and melodies carry messages about identity, gender, love and respect – all the while remaining utterly faithful to her Gambian, Muslim cultural heritage.
