Moonlight Benjamin was born in Haiti and grew up in a protestant orphanage, finding her distinctive voice at first in church. But, as she grew older, she immersed herself in the older traditions of her culture, before leaving for Europe. There, in France, Moonlight Benjamin began to collaborate with world music and jazz artists, at the same time as deepening her interest in her voodoo heritage. Today her music is often described as "Voodoo blues rock” as she uses her songs to bring her love of Haitian culture to a wider audience. Described as a “Caribbean Patti Smith”, Moonlight Benjamin is a wonderful artist making compelling, soulful and authentic music.
