Cornel West once said, “Justice is what love looks like in public.” All too often it can feel as though that love isn’t as visible as we might like it to be. And without justice there can be no peace. People often quote Martin Luther King’s comment that “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.” Similarly, it can feel like that arc is way too long. But it’s worth remembering that in his iconic speech MLK was himself quoting 19th century abolitionist and Unitarian minister Theodore Parker, and his words written more than a century earlier. The long view might not feel like it bends as quickly as we’d like, but it does bend. Not that we have to be content to wait as that slow arc curves its course. No, in the here and now, in the everyday, it’s we who need to be the change we want to see in the world.
