About
Venice Carnival takes over the city for the fortnight before Lent, in February or early March. It dates back centuries and was revived in its modern form in 1979.
Masks and costumes are everywhere, with parades, masked balls, concerts and events in St Mark's Square and around the city. The Flight of the Angel, when a performer descends from the bell tower of St Mark's, opens the main celebrations, and there's a contest for the most beautiful mask.
