About
Roskilde was first held in 1971 and is run as a non-profit, with the money raised going to humanitarian and cultural causes. It takes place just outside the town of Roskilde, about half an hour from Copenhagen, at the end of June and into July.
The Orange Stage, its canopy bought from a Rolling Stones tour, is the landmark. The bill is one of Europe's broadest: rock, pop, rap, metal, electronic and music from around the world, with a strong line in art and activism. It's a week-long camping festival, with the main music days at the end, run largely by volunteers.
