About
Montreux Jazz Festival was founded by Claude Nobs in 1967 and is held on the shores of Lake Geneva in early to mid July.
Despite the name, it covers jazz, blues, soul, rock, pop and rap, with ticketed concerts in the Auditorium Stravinski and the Lab and free stages along the lakeside. Its first home, the Montreux Casino, burned down during a Frank Zappa show in 1971, the fire that inspired Deep Purple's 'Smoke on the Water', and the festival's archive of concert recordings is listed by UNESCO.
