Glastonbury Festival

Glastonbury has been held at Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset, since Michael Eavis put on the first one in September 1970, the day after Jimi Hendrix died. He now runs it with his daughter Emily, and it is the biggest greenfield festival in the UK and the most famous anywhere.

The Pyramid and Other Stages carry the headline names, but the site works as a set of separate festivals: the Park, Shangri-La and the south-east corner after dark, the Green Fields, the Left Field's politics, plus theatre, circus and cabaret. Tickets go on sale before any line-up is announced, and the farm takes a fallow year every few years to let the land rest. Money raised goes to Oxfam, Greenpeace and WaterAid, among others.
