About
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe began in 1947, when eight theatre groups turned up uninvited to the first Edinburgh International Festival and performed anyway. It's now the biggest arts festival in the world, filling the city for most of August.
Anyone can take part, so the programme is huge: comedy, theatre, dance, cabaret, music, spoken word and children's shows in hundreds of venues, from big theatres to pub back rooms. The Royal Mile is lined with performers handing out flyers.
