You're living in Japan, so are you paying the NHK fee? I don't have a TV so of course I won't pay for their history, political anti-japan propaganda crapy shits 🙂
one thing worth mentioning is the interview encapsulated the history – plus a few more nuggets — of band-maid in a few minutes.
The opportunity for Band Maid is to have exposure on such a major TV channel as NHK seen by millions of Japanese viewers. And no one is more competent than Miku to promote the group. Po!
Agreed with everything you said about exposure. I do feel that world Domination will not be helped by only doing two tours in Japan and the US in the last two years since 2019. I realise that they wanted to cover any gaps in the first US tour, but a better decision would have been to tour the UK/EU etc first. US fans were pleasantly surprised but others were unpleasantly pissed off- just a bit. Pigeons Cooo!
Yes Miku does all the talking but let’s be fair, it’s not like any of the others really want to take over on point
Shingo Murakami (male host) is the member of the band called Kanjani Eight (he is the keyboard player). As being the NHK program, most likely all comments and questions were prescripted, but hosts reactions were genuine…I believe😏
It was a very good show, regardless👍
Given recent events, it is so appropriate that Songs of Tokyo, which showcased Yoshiki in its first episode, would feature Band Maid in its final episode.
Thanks Baka! Great breakdown!
Great commentary Baka 🙂
As both a fan of the band and subscriber of this channel, I was especially interested in your take on this. I thought it was a very very good appearance and I was impressed with the interviewers TBH.
I also learned something as someone with only general western knowledge of Japanese culture about the Kenji. That was fascinating!
Im often explaining that the captions struggle and theres clearly a depth the Mikus lyrics, but I never knew about that part. I feel validated by this epiphany! haha
Thanks, great discussion of the Maid's Songs of Toyko appearance! I agree that this can have nothing but a positive impact, but rattling around in the back of my brain was a question that, as one who lives in Japan, you might be able to answer: in the context of other media, streaming or broadcast, what kind of viewership does NHK have in Japan? Is it a flagship broadcast outlet like BBC One, or is it further down the pecking order?
Regarding their performances: I got the feeling that doing a few streaming concerts during Covid gave them a bit of an advantage. They know playing on a sound stage to a camera is not the ideal way to deliver their music but if they have to, they are capable of it. That's professionalism … dealing with less then ideal circumstances in the most graceful way possible.
English pigeons say "coo".
I wasn't expecting to learn anything from that interview, but the four-character idioms thing was new to me.
Btw your thing about Band-Maid not being a household name – which is obviously true – made me laugh, because your example of an actual household name was a Korean group I would never have heard of if I hadn't got into the Japanese music scene. I know they're much more famous than any of the bands we talk about here, but that doesn't mean that most westerners know about them. I think the only genuine East Asian music household name in the west is the song Gangnam Style, and even then, I doubt most westerners could name the artist.
Whatever happens, it will be on their own terms. I can't see them ever giving up on their integrity as artists and musicians.
The choice of songs seemed perfect for a television broadcast. The interview was dynamic and surprisingly entertaining (the part where they explained the Yojijukugo method was excellent). I think it has been a winning blow for the girls. I get the feeling that Pony Canyon is betting big on its winning horse.
I hadn't realised this was the last episode. It must have been a great honour. Did see the Band Maid segments and as usual they are always good value.
