Clifton George Bailey the third was born in the Jamaican village of Islington on April 13, 1967. By using his songs to address social issues, and inform his young audience about Rastafarian spirituality, Capleton, also known as Capleton the Prophet, set out to counter the bawdy side of dancehall reggae music. With songs like “Stay Far from Trouble,” “More Prophet,” “Who Dem,” “Ready When U Ready,” and “Look Good in Her Clothes,” Capleton has popularized Rastafari culture, and established himself as a top dancehall reggae vocalist. Reggae music’s offspring, dancehall, commonly referred to as “ragamuffin,” was born in Jamaica in the 1980s. One of the first to release Capleton’s tracks was VP Records. In total, VP would distribute six albums for Capleton, who had a brief affiliation with the Def Jam label group in 1995.
