These are highlights from the pedestal lion dance performance by Hong De Athletic and Cultural Association (åŠ æ‹¿å¤§å¼˜å¾·æ–‡åŒ–é«”è‚²æœƒ) at the Chinese Pavilion during the Edmonton Heritage Festival 2019 in the 5:30 pm time on Aug 3. This was their 1st pedestal performance of the festival. I edited out some slower parts and a fall to shorten the viewing time. Julian is playing the head in the second orange lion, with Alex as his tail. The first orange lion is played by Martin and Mason.
The acrobatic pedestal routine is definitely spectacular and quite exciting to watch.
It was windy every day at the festival, which made the pedestal routine more difficult than it already is. It is hard to see under the lion costume, and the lion players have to pretty much do their jumps from physical memory established during intensive practice. The wind pulls at the lion costumes and makes balancing and jumping extra challenging. There were a few falls during the 3 days of the festival, but fortunately, no serious injuries occurred. Kudos to the players for their perseverance and courage!
