In Jacques Offenbach’s LES CONTES D’HOFFMANN, the poet Hoffmann encounters his own literary figures in a puzzle of reality and imagination. He is also fascinated by the singer Olympia with her highly virtuoso “Les oiseaux dans la charmille”. But it is only when he has long become the laughing stock of society that Hoffmann realises: Olympia is a wind-up doll.
