Born in a traditional family of great Sanskrit scholars and musicians revered by the Kings of Mysore, Gurudutt’s great-grandfathers, both paternal and maternal, were acclaimed flutists of that era. His grandfathers, Chilkunda Brothers, are a household name across Karnataka while his uncles, too, are highly accomplished flutists. At the tender age of 4 years his mother, Smt. C. N. Annapurna initiated him into Carnatic vocal music. Soon he also started training under his uncle Shri A. K. Viswanath, a great poet, flutist, and composer, in playing bamboo flute in Carnatic style, which continued for two decades. Later Gurudutt developed a great desire to learn Hindustani vocal music and started training under Smt. Geetha Bhat from Dharwad, a disciple of Pandit M. G. Patwardhan from the lineage of Gayanacharya Pandit Gururao Deshpande.
In 2013, Gurudutt became part of the lineage of stalwarts like Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Padma Bhushan Deshikottam Pandit Jnan Prakash Ghosh when he came under the tutelage of Sangeet Samra Padma Bhushan Pandit Ajoy Chakrabarty, in the Guru-Shishya parampara. Presently he is staying at Kolkata under the care and guidance of Panditji undergoing extensive training and traveling across the country with him. His understanding of Carnatic vocal and instrumental music helped him assimilate Panditji’s guidance in a very short time.
Gurudutt has performed at prive Baithak at ITC Sangeet Research Academy, Kolkata, Rasika Ranjani Sabha of Chenai, IIT Chennai, “Panchamada Inchara” music festival at Sri Ramakrishna Math, Mangalore, and many other programs in several other cities across the country. His music is characterized by the delicate handling of Swaras which move listeners to tears, lilting Layakari and rousing Taans. His versatility in presenting Khayal, Thumri, Marathi Abhang, Kanada Dasara Pada, Hindi songs of Tulsidas and Bengali Rabindra Sangeet with equal ease is noteworthy. He has also performed series of concerts of Carnatic flute, including those at Singapore and Dubai.
An All India Radio artist in Carnatic flute and Hindustani Vocal, Gurudutt was appreciated through many awards including “Yuva Pratibhe” by Government of Karnataka, “Mr. Virtuoso” and “Mr. Voice” by Carnatica, a Gold Medal by KLE group of institutions for the best performance in Carnatic flute music, “Ragashree Yuva Puraskar” from Ragashree School of Music conferred by Pandit Venkatesh Kumar and “Sanadi Appanna Shri National Award 2019”. Gurudutt holds BBM degree from Bangalore University and PGDM from AIMA, Delhi, both with distinction.
