FESTIVAL HIGHLIGHTS: For Mary Ann – Steve Melshenker (1970)

Festivals and gigs. A listings calendar, plus previews, news, reviews, and photos

Well, I finally got a copy of the Red Herring Bootleg Album in the mail today! That means all of the albums are on this channel now. Time to upload something different. :p

To give a brief introduction to what you’re hearing, the Red Herring was apparently established in 1967 as a coffee house and centre of folk music and social activism within the campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s, it produced a series of private press records featuring highlights from the annual fall folk festival (though the records themselves were sporadic). They’re charming, mellow, entertaining, and sometimes haunting, and there’s definitely a lot of talent featured. Most of the songs are originals, though some traditional folk is represented. It’s been a joy to collect each record and I hope you get just as much joy from listening to them.
