The Scottish Blues Weekend
Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival launches a new annual winter Blues Festival – dedicated to the best of the Scottish Blues scene. Each year we’re going to ask a leading blues musician to select a programme and first up is Scotland’s champion of classic blues, Richard O’Donnell. He’s selected “the very best current and new generations of Scottish blues musicians in more traditional and authentic styles of blues music”, and with the added bonus of two of the very best International blues artists in the classic style, as guests for the weekend: Øyvind Stølefjell and Big Jon Atkinson.
Friday 22nd February
Guitar Blues
The Blue Hyenas, Jed Potts Hillman Hunters ft. Øyvind Stølefjell, Al Brown & The Bluelighters

The weekend kicks off with one of EJBF’s famous three band line-ups, and the three electric blues guitar players who take their inspiration from classic blues. Sandy Tweeddale, Jed Potts and Al Brown have styles rooted in pre-rock blues, and they’ll present their current artists, with Øyvind Stølefjell’s Otis Spann style piano guesting with Jed, and Big Jon Atkinson adding very authentic vintage 1950s blues styles on guitar, harmonica and more to Al’s band’s sound

Kyla Brox + Blue Milk

UK Blues Challenge winner, Kyla’s voice offers a stunning example of the soul singer’s art: turning up the heat by degrees, lulling and charming before unleashing emotional catharsis, and blurring the distinction between pleasure and pain like the soul greats of old. Glasgow-based guitar power trio,Blue Milk cover all the bases from the Delta to 1960s blues rock.

The Roots of The Blues
Mud In Your Ear, ft. Øyvind Stølefjell + Toby Mottershead

Authentic old blues styles, evoking back porch parties and Mississippi delta roots from Richard O'Donnell's acoustic blues wizards, Mud In Your Ear. Guitarist and vocalist Toby Mettorshead plays old-time blues, inspired by the roots, ragtime and gospel of the pre-war era.

Baby Isaac, ft. Big Jon Atkinson

Capturing the essence of 50s Chicago Blues & Swing and influenced by such Blues greats as T-Bone Walker, BB King, Little Walter and Sonny Terry, Baby Isaac deliver a powerful and dynamic mix of Blues, Swing, R & B and Jazz – and feature Big Jon guesting for one set.

A Celebration of Scottish Blues
The Jensen Interceptors, Tim Elliott & Sandy Tweeddale, Allan Jones
Teviot Row, 8.30-10.30pm, £15
Another great triple bill, kicked off by acoustic blues guitar/vocalist, Allan Jones, recreating early blues authenticity. Blues n Trouble leader and long-time Scottish Blues great, Elliott, is in Duo format, singing and playing harmonica, with guitarist, Tweeddale, before one of the best electric blues artists on the current scene take us to Chicago and Memphis, fronted by the supercharged vocals and harmonica of Gary Martin.

The Late Night Blues Jam

Piano Blues

A real rarity. A grand piano, and four brilliant blues pianists. They’ll remind us how the Blues sounds on an old fashioned acoustic piano, and evoke memories of many piano greats, from Otis Spann and Sunnyland Slim, to Pinetop Perkins.

Closing Concert:
The Big Jon Atkinson Band
St Brides Centre, 7.30-9.30pm, £15
Across the American Blues scene there’s no young musician who stands out more as the keeper of the Blues flame in the 21st Century. Jon Atkinson sings; plays low-down and nasty, bottle-neck slide guitar; full on early Chicago style lead; and gut-bucket harmonica. Mid-century electric blues is a specialism, and he plays everything from in the pocket Memphis/Sun covers to wild interpretations of raw post war Chicago gems.
