A larger than life personality, Charles Mingus created music that hummed with blood and roared with passion. His virtuosic, punchy bass playing aside, his great strength lay in being able to incorporate the whole history of jazz – and sometimes its future – channelling it into an eloquent and intensely moving testimony.
This year marks 100 years since Mingus’ birth and we have two concerts in our programme to honour the anniversary. On Wednesday 20 July, David Bowden will be joined by five Scottish musicians to play one of jazz’s most celebrated albums ‘Ah Um’ (https://www.edinburghjazzfestival.com/artist/david-bowden-plays-mingus-ah-um) and, on Sunday 24 July, Emma Smith presents her take on the music of the maverick bassist and composer (https://www.edinburghjazzfestival.com/artist/emma-smith-take-mingus)
