Chalk fundamentally understand the dynamics of a live show…
…and singer Ross Cullen REALLY knows his way around a vocal delay effect pedal!
If we were to put Chalk into a pigeonhole they would find themselves filed alongside Glasgow’s current industrial post-something darlings of the live music scene, VLURE (who we’ve been championing throughout 2023 after first seeing them on the Red stage at Rockaway Beach this time last year).
Chalk’s signature song, ‘Conditions’, comes across as a dirty homage to the anthemic ‘Born Slippy’, and maybe the Belfast trios roots in film-making mean that their tunes always have the potential to find their way into a movie score.
There’s another song in the set with intro that has a proper ‘Radio GA GA’ intro…and it’s no bad thing that these splashes of familiarity act as hooks to catch the ear of new fans who are looking for something fresh and new.
As we march into 2024 we will be waving a flag for Chalk (alongside fellow Irish artists Gurriers and Scustin, and London pop-punkers About Bunny) as a band that any self-respecting festival ought to be giving stage space to.
Hats off the the Rockaway Beach team for bringing this band to so many people’s attention…including ours.
