An animated vision of the spirit of the 1970s free festivals

Festivals and gigs. A listings calendar, plus previews, news, reviews, and photos

We just stumbled on this great little animated romp through the psychedelic ’70s free festival scene and spoke to it’s creator, Jude Montague, about the project.

The free festivals of the 1970s were full of sensory experiences. I did manage to pop in to Glastonbury but the local one up north was Deeply Vale with a more urban vibe. Chris Hewitt has an incredible archive site for it here and you can find out more about the archive and ephemera from these festivals which, if you went, even visited briefly, you never forgot.

I am a poet and my films rely on this sensibility where the aesthetic of the picture is a fundamental part of the emotional content and communication. This film concentrates on the sensory experiences of music festivals in the permissive society days of psychedelic rock and psychedelic drugs, camping, joss sticks, patchouli oil and tinned food (powdered potatoes and plum tomatoes). The music track is by local band Montague Armstrong.

I made this film in Hastings. I have a print workshop at 15 Kings Road, next to Dandelion Deli – Montague Armstrong. If you see us open please pop in, and get some creative vibes.
