Watchet Music Festival Live 2019

Behind the Scenes

Meet the Watchet Wombles

Colin Burnett leads a team of very keen volunteers who manage the waste clearance and disposal on the festival site. I met with Colin and some of the volunteers at Watchet Football Club to talk with them about the work they carry out behind the scenes at the Festival.

Colin became involved with the festival about ten years ago when the site moved from East Quay Watchet to the current site at Parsonage Farm on the edge of Watchet. The Waste Management team is made up of Colin Burnett, Lisa Duffield, Andrew Duffield, Dean Thompson, Helen Jones, Paul Sawatzki, James Sawatzki and Daniel Perkins.

Spending time with the volunteers gave a real insight into the tremendous work they carry out. Clearance of the festival site starts while most of us are still catching up on sleep after a night of music and entertainment. The team start work at 7.00am clearing litter, emptying bins and transporting waste to the skips, all being well they will finish about 9.30 am. An afternoon shift checks the festival site bins and dumpy bags and another sweep of the site takes place during the evening. All waste removal is contracted to Exmoor Skip a local company. The waste is separated and sorted so maximum recycling is carried out.

Campsites are also checked and bin bags are left at tents and camper vans for festival goers to use to collect their rubbish.

The team said โ€œThe festival people are great they do their best to keep the campsites clean. They also donate their tinned/packet food to the local food bank at the end of the festival which helps those in needโ€.

Q I asked the team โ€œWhat do you get from volunteering?โ€

A We love volunteering, we would do it every weekend. As a team we have a lot of fun and laughter. We really appreciate the thanks we get from people at the festival for the work we carry out. Itโ€™s great to be able to give something back to our community.

Q Where did the name the Watchet Wombles come from?

A The name came from the Doonicans. The Barsteward Sons of Val Doonican have a great Watchet Womble following. This is also the band the team are most looking forward to seeing in 2019 and this is a unanimous decision. Andrew is also looking forward to seeing Alabama3.

Q Any stories to tell about things you have seen while working?

A What goes on at the festival stays at the festival! Colin in a wheelie bin, oh and the naked lady who popped out of her tent to ask what time is it?

Hats off to the waste management team for their time, effort and hard work, all part of what makes Watchet Music Festival so good. AC
