Tumako is a Toronto-based Afrobeat, Funk and Soul ensemble. The five members combine tight, accomplished musicianship with total commitment to setting a groove that energizes audiences and inspires people to dance. Through its live shows, Tumako has been bringing fun, rhythmically-driven music and strong improvisational stylings to GTA audiences since 2015.
Tumako’s members are artists with wildly-varied musical backgrounds. The band is composed of Robert Bravo on Bass, Marco Bonatti on Baritone Sax, Benjamin Thomas on Drums, Richard Dao on Electric Guitar and José Torcal on Alto Sax. Drawing on a background in Classical and Jazz piano studies, Robert contributes strong skills in composition and arranging and has additional influences that include Rock, Pop, Folk and Celtic music. Marco has extensive experience in Classic Jazz and Brass Band street music. He gives the group a strong Blues and improvisational element. Benjamin’s influences and interests span a wide breadth of genres from Gospel to Big Band, Hip Hop to Electronica. He brings to the band a high-level of performing experience and his turbocharged style keeps the adrenalin pumping with heavy, driving beats. Richard’s roots are in Jazz and Blues/Rock, and he counts Chinese Classical music among his interests. Richard provides an exciting complement to Marco’s playing and seeing them play off of each other is one of the highlights of live performances. Finally, José is trained in Classical and Traditional Spanish music and has a background in Latin street band playing.
You can catch Tumako playing regularly at the Gladstone Hotel, Horseshoe Tavern, The Local, The Axis, and at various festivals around the GTA. The band has also been featured on prominent media like JazzFM. In April 2018, Tumako released a self-titled EP consisting of brand-new originals and are currently writing their debut full-length LP.
