The Oval Tavern, Croydon
131 Oval Road
Croydon,  CR0 6BR Map

And he's back! He loves Croydon so much he name-checks it in one of his songs. If you haven't already seen him on on of his Cronx visits, then quite frankly, you need to get out more. If you have seen him before there are some new songs on this tour, although I'm sure he'll do the odd golden oldie if we ask him nicely.

For the past 15 years or so, Jewish-Canadian accordion player/singer-songwriter/novelist Geoff Berner has travelled the world. He’s played in bars, cafes, festivals, and the occasional stadium. He’s performed in 17 countries, on national radio in 7 of them.

Aliki Krikidi // Babette Semmer // Grant Foster // Ben Westley Clarke // Denzil Forrester // Lucy Stein // David Harrison // Steven Allan // Melissa Kime // Vanessa Mitter // Jack Catling // Robin Bale // Stuart Brisley

Curated by Vanessa Mitter and Ben Westley Clarke

“In a world that has really been turned on its head, truth is a moment of falsehood” – Guy Debord

“There is nothing funny about Halloween. This sarcastic festival reflects, rather, an infernal demand for revenge by children on the adult world” – Jean Baudrillard

The ubiquity of photography and advertising and our involuntary immersion in the mediated world assembled by it, demand a creative human response. How can we live, uninhibited, when constantly bombarded by the instructive and the inauthentic? How can we know embodied, unselfconscious experience in the society of images and spectacle? Perhaps a solution lies in bearing witness to its cacophonic multiplicity of truths. Perhaps the highly personalised, playful nature of the activity of painting confronts its tyranny directly, with its antidote.

Painters transform their childhood impulses to shriek, taunt, sing and run wild into vociferous, effusive experimentation. Like ecstatic bambinos, clutching watermelon slices and plastic axes, faces are painted like skulls; they play, unbounded, as a matter of course. Wielding paint, they throw themselves, cackling, into the dance of art and life. The tradition of painting goes back and back. They invoke their ancestors and invite the dead to dance with them, their frisky rebellion allowing modernity to be reimagined as anything other than drab. Beneath the dull concrete of the everyday lies the tropical beach of expression. Sweetness doesn’t just emerge out of nowhere. It has to be willed into existence.

All of the painters in this exhibition are ‘painters of modern life’. The life impulse coexists with the death impulse. The painters bear witness, with an inextinguishable verve and energy, like spirits walking amongst the living. They have one foot in the grave. It dangles precariously. ‘No, no, the work of art is not destined for the generations of children to come. It’s offered to the innumerable dead. Who approve. Or refuse it‘ 1

Frivolous Convulsions is an exhibition which collides carnivalesque and celebratory renditions of modern life. From effusive expressionism to calculated documentary; from the folksy to the ultramodern, the clash of idioms and practices proposes the impulse towards painting as an essential social phenomenon. Each painting simultaneously addresses a need to converse and interact, and a need for individualism and boldness. In dialogue with the dead painters of history, the artists continue relentlessly in their search to marry storytelling with formal, pictorial invention.

Exhibition - A Journey Through Brutalism

Exhibition - A Journey Through Brutalism

Feb 22, 6:00pm - Feb 22, 9:00pm

RISEgallery
7-9 St George's Walk
Croydon,  CR0 1YH Map

Private View Thursday 22nd February 2018, 6 - 9pm.
RSVP essential via rsvp@rise-gallery.co.uk

Brutalism – Utopia or Dystopia?

A style that flourished from the 1950s to the mid-1970s, and has more recently seen a rebirth, Brutalism continues to divide people to this day; you either love or you hate it!

‘A Journey Through Brutalism’ is an exhibition presenting artistic homages to the versatile and majestic architectural form through a wide range of media.

With artwork, tours, film screenings and special talks, this month-long ode to Brutalism is sure to give you a fresh perspective on those towering monoliths of concrete you may avert your eyes from on your morning commute!

Originating from the French word for “raw” and Le Corbusier’s description of his material of choice, béton brut (raw concrete), the term ‘Brutalism’ came into wider use in the UK after British architectural critic Reyner Banham titled his 1966 book, ‘The New Brutalism’.

Brutalism became popular with governmental and institutional clients, because of concrete’s cost advantage: it is cheap and abundant, the second most consumed material in the world, after water. Architects of the era shared these ideals, and Croydon is one of the only London boroughs where you can see so many examples of their creations, with no less than 45 office blocks (mostly skyscrapers) built – an impressive 6 million square feet in all!

Today, Croydon’s reputation remains largely based on the Brutalist footprint of yesteryear. This exhibition looks at Brutalist architecture; past, present and future, with a particular focus on the London Borough of Croydon and celebrating its architectural heritage.

Exhibiting artists include:

Adam Halliday
Charlie Lang
Glenn Foster
Jonathan Meades
Louise Gough
Laurent Bompard
Mark McClure
Owen Calvert

Special Guest Speakers at the Private View:

Jonathan Meades, writer and presenter of the BBC documentaries ‘Bunkers, Brutalism, Bloodymindedness: Concrete Poetry’ and ‘Benbuilding - Mussolini, Monuments, Modernism and Marble’ and John Grindrod, author of ‘Outskirts: Living Life on the Edge of the Green Belt’, ‘Concretopia: A Journey Around the Rebuilding of Postwar Britain’ and the forthcoming ‘How to Love Brutalism’.

The stunning neo-soul and jazz grooves of the wonderful Hil St Soul return to Hideaway

"It's rare in the soul arena for UK based acts to genuinely give the Americans a run for their money, but Hil St Soul seem on track to do just that." BBC Music

“One of the UK’s most quietly-consistent soul music exports to the US” Blues & Soul Magazine

Hilary Mwelwa, aka Hil St Soul was born in Lusaka, Zambia and relocated to London with her family at age five. As a child she adopted her father’s love of music, their home immersed with the sounds of traditional Zambian music along with American R&B/Soul icons such as Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder.

Her 1999 debut album 'Soul Organic' received widespread acclaim and featured a cover of Aretha Franklin's 'Until you Come Back to Me' which has been playlisted on Jazz FM and soul/smooth jazz radio stations all over the world for over 17 years. This was followed in 2002 with 'Copasetik & Cool' which included her hit version of The Isley Brothers evergreen classic 'For the Love of You'. Her last album 'Black Rose' (2008) featured the neo-soul anthem 'Smile'.

Hilary has had the privilege of performing at great events and venues around the world alongside an array of great artists and musical legends including James Brown, D’Angelo, Angie Stone, Macy Gray, Isaac Hayes, Donell Jones, Boys II Men, Lalah Hathaway, Rashaan Patterson, Calvin Richardson and Jodeci.

Spencer Brown

Not so much a comedian as a force of nature, Spencer Brown is ripping up the comedy circuit like a cartoon tornado. Young, fresh, and like nothing you've ever seen before; crowds have been wowed by his childlike anarchy and Looney Tunes physicality in performances described by Time Out as "more an event than a gig." Seeing Spencer Brown is like a plugging into the comedy mainframe, so prepare to have your mind blown: this is refreshing, goofy comedy that will make you love life. He has performed stand-up on The Live Floor Show (BBC 2), Four at the Store (R4), and The Best of Edinburgh Comedy (BBC 2).

He has also appeared in Garth Merenghi's Darkplace (C4) and written for Smack the Pony (C4).

Kae is also an active campaigner and human rights activist. At just 24 years old has already been interviewed for Newsbeaa, Radio 5 Live, Russia Today as well being a regular speaker at various events including The Kurdistan Emergency Appeal and the American Kurdish Youth Festivals.

Join us for Turf’s reading group discussing unexpected and unusual texts inspired by our current exhibition.

The book to accompany exhibition Frivolous Convulsions will beJean Genet’s “The Thief’s Journal”, partnered with Federico Garcia Lorca’s “Theory and Function of the Duende”.

The ‘Duende’ is characterised by irrationality, earthiness, a heightened awareness of death, and a dash of the diabolical. It’s the physical/emotional response to art – giving you chills or making you smile or cry as a bodily reaction to a particularly expressive artistic performance. Visit the website listing to read a PDF version of the essay or feel free to visit Turf to read in the workspace!

“The Thief’s Journal” is a novel which is part fiction and part autobiography. The novel is structured around a series of homosexual love affairs and male prostitution between the author anti-hero and various criminals, con artists, pimps, and a detective.

It’s free to join us and take part in the discussions! Free refreshments will also be available.

Croydon,  CR0 1YH Map

As part of our month long exhibition ‘A Journey Through Brutalism’, which celebrates the versatile architectural form, RISEgallery have teamed up with The National Trust to deliver a series of walking tours throughout March 2018 which will delve into the contemporary heritage of Croydon and shine a spotlight on the borough as one of the most important examples of Brutalist and Modernist architecture. In fact, Croydon is one of the only London boroughs where you can see so many of these examples of post-war optimism.

As John Grindrod, author of the best-selling Concretopia, and a Croydonian himself notes, “there are millions of people like me in Britain, who don’t recognise the village green, country cottage or Georgian square as the epitome of our nation, but whose identities have instead been moulded by ‘concrete monstrosities’ or ‘bad planning’ – or rather, the post-war optimism that sought to build a better future.”

As Croydon continues to undergo such rapid change, join us as we celebrate its brutalist landscape on a 60 minute guided tour. Spaces are limited.

Please wear comfortable footwear.

// ABOUT BEN WESTLEY CLARKE

Ben Westley Clarke studied at Byam Shaw School of Art, The Slade School of Fine Art and the New York Studio School, before studying at the Royal Drawing School. Before the Drawing Year, Ben’s paintings documented a working-class, Irish pub in Somers Town, with its regular characters and unpredictable goings-on. Since enrolling, Ben has worked towards livelier, more cacophonic images – his interest in social communion and interaction has led him to explore the carnivalesque and the festive. Drawing at Carnivals, Barn Dances and Gay Pride parades, Ben seeks a Rabelaisian image of modern life. Recent shows include “The Cock Tavern Paintings Part 2” at Chalton Gallery and “Grit: 11 Painters” at Mercer Chance, London.

Returning to Stanley Halls - Kevin Dempsey & Joe Broughton

Since forming in 1999 this incredible duo have recorded four albums and toured extensively in over 20 countries round the world. Combining emotive songs, unrivalled instrumental capability and a spectacular high energy show, they never fail to create a spellbinding atmosphere.

The list of musicians they have played with is impressive...

Whippersnapper, Mary Black, Joss Stone, Dando Shaft, The Urban Folk Quartet, Fairport Convention, The Albion Band, Dave Swarbrick, Percy Sledge, Bellowhead....

but it can't prepare you for this unique partnership.

To pigeon hole their style of music would be to do them a disservice. They draw on Folk music from all corners of the world but their experience in Jazz, Soul, Classical, Pop and Rock music takes the result into original and uncharted territory.

What you'll notice at their concerts is not only the originality of what this acoustic duo plays, but also the simple fact that they do it so well. Kevin has a fantastic voice and is widely regarded as one of Europe's greatest acoustic guitar players, whilst Joe is simply unmatched in the world of fiddle pyrotechnics.

To top it all, the Dempsey Broughton show is playful and entertaining, you almost have to pinch yourself and remember to take it all in as they swoop from beautiful song to mind blowing tune via a stream of hilarious banter. Two hours with Kevin Dempsey and Joe Broughton can seem like 10 minutes.

“Superb musicianship, brilliant conception and execution…all you people who think you can jazz-up folk music - hear this and weep!”

LAST FLAG FLYING (15) – 2017 USA 125 mins
Tuesday 27 February 2018 at 7:30 pm
Director: Richard Linklater
Stars: Bryan Cranston, Laurence Fishburne, Steve Carell

Thirty years after serving together in Vietnam, three veterans reunite after the death of one of their sons in Iraq. While Last Flag Flying is most obviously a middle-aged male road trip movie, it has great depth – exploring regret, repentance, political deception and the bonds of friendship with a mixture of sadness and humour. This sad yet hilarious tale is driven by commanding performances from Cranston, Carell and Fishburne.

2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

“Wow! How Good Is Si Cranstoun?” Chris Evans, BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show

“Infectious!! Motown Soul fused with Rock & Roll” Chris Wells, Echoes Magazine

“… a classy throwback to the classic sound of the early sixties” The Express

Cranstoun’s vocal style has been compared to the likes of Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke, while his music is a pure blend of northern soul, Motown and vintage pop. With hugely catchy hooks and a contemporary sound that also captures the look and feel of a golden era in soul and R&B, Cranstoun’s sound is full of the classic energy and verve of a bygone era but brought up to the present day, prompting Chris Evans to describe him as “A squeeze of The Bee Gees, a bit of Billy Joel, a dash of Dean Freidman, and a ripple of Rodriguez.”

From South London busker to supporting Little Richard in Las Vegas followed by a major record deal with Warners, the rise of this soulful singer who finds his roots in the late fifties and early sixties golden era of music has been spectacular securing him a host of radio play and TV appearances.

George Shovlin & The Radars - Live!

Just £5 gets you in and tickets can be booked via www.TheTuesdayNightMusicClub.co.uk or purchased from the bar at The Comrades Club.

Last time George Shovlin & The Radars visited us we had this to say:

"They came on a missionary expedition to introduce the cream of the North East to the South. And they converted a room full of lucky people into believers. When George Shovlin and George Lamb took to the stage and sat themselves down we had no idea what was about to take place. But then the combined passion and soul of Mr Shovlins vocals and their guitars rang out and slowly all became clear. Over the course of three sets and in excess of two hours George Shovlin & The Radars took us on a journey through the blues. As a duo they were mesmerising and as a band they made every person in that lucky room a disciple. If you want to see a gig with humour, great guitars, a drummer and bassist in perfect sync, heartfelt passionate vocals and good times you quite simply have to see this band. The word will be spreading as we write this. Last night was their first visit to the South and you can bet it will be the first of many.
Thanks to Rockrpix Photography for the pictures and to EQaudio for the usual great sound last night (to quote George Shovlin 'our thanks to Simon for probably the best sound we've ever had')"

And now they're back! Get your tickets quick!

Harris Academy South Norwood

London,  SE25 6AD Map

Get ready for International Women’s Day with a fearless documentary exploring the raw and energic world of Jamaican Dancehall culture, seen through the eyes of the women at its very heart.

Bruk Out! follows six of the boldest and bravest Dancehall Queens from around the world—Japan, Italy, America, Poland, Spain, and of course, Jamaica—as they prepare to battle for the biggest trophy in all of Dancehall. Combining explosive underground dance visuals with emotionally intimate scenes, the film is a never-before-seen window into the life of the Dancehall Queen.

Filmmaker Cori Wapnowska spent two years uncovering the struggles the Queens face around body issues, poverty, family problems, and domestic abuse. The dancers bare their skin and their souls to dispel myths about this hyper-sexual dance, explaining why it brings them pure joy, sense of self, and the strength to overcome. Often criticized as lewd and aggressively sexual, these daring performers turned Jamaican street dance into a massive global phenomenon.

This film is presented in partnership with Dancehall Origins and Ignition Dance Company, who will bring the magic of dancehall to life with a fun and dynamic dance class before the film. All levels welcome. Starts 6.30pm. Places are limited to 40 and cost £5 per person. This does not include entry to the film and these tickets must be purchased separately. Having sold out Hideaway in double quick time last year, Tony Momrelle returns for two nights of pure soul!

You know you’ve got soul when Stevie Wonder gives you a call! Tony Momrelle is understandably drawing praise from high places, as the Incognito vocalist steps into the spotlight to reveal a mighty fine solo artist in the ascendancy.

Singer-songwriter Tony Momrelle has toured with the biggest and best. He kick-started his career as a backing vocalist for Gloria Estefan, and then went on to work for Whitney Houston, Sir Elton John, Take That and most recently Sade.

Now Tony is ready to focus fully on his solo career. His 2015 album ‘Keep Pushing’ launched him firmly into the realm of solo star, with the title track hitting number one on the UK Soul Charts. He also received a nomination for Best Male Vocalist from SoulTracks and recently appeared on Later… with Jools Holland.

Prince Abdi

Somalian born Prince Abdi is a British Stand-Up, actor, writer and a regular on the UK comedy circuit. His versatile and unique story telling style of comedy made him the perfect choice to support Reginald D Hunter, Stephen K Amos and Dave Chappelle on their national tours. He has also performed alongside fellow comedians Chris Rock and Louis CK.

Prince has written and starred in his own television sketch for the BBC, Comedy Central and ITV, as well as comedy and drama features. He has performed on Comedy Central’s The World Stands Up, BBC Three’s Laughter Shock and ITV’s FHM Stand Up Hero. His other credits include BBC’s The Wall, Channel 4’s Channel 4 Presents, BBC’s The Jason Lewis Experience and Diary of a Bad Man, Part 10.

Jeff's film credits include the role of a publican in 'It Was an Accident' and he played a prisoner in 'Mean Machine' alongside Vinnie Jones.

“His gags come from his subversion of ethical values by juxtaposing them with his wide-boy charm." Metro "Clever, honest, funny, hugely likeable comedy. I really loved this show" Kate Copstick, The Scotsman

James Bran as MC

James Bran is a fast-rising talent on the UK comedy circuit. Refreshingly different, whilst still appealing to main stream comedy audiences, he's bringing his quirky blend of stand-up and comic poetry to clubs all over the country.

Despite being a relative newcomer to the comedy scene at large, James is a resident MC at both Crack Comedy and The Patchwork Club. This experience has made him a polished and confident performer belying his limited time as a circuit act.

"I absolutely adored James Bran's combination of world-weary haikus given a deliciously wonky delivery" - Huffington Post

Picture from film. It’s World War II, and Britain faces its darkest hour as the threat of invasion looms. The fate of Western Europe now hangs on the leadership of the newly-appointed British Prime Minister, Winston Churchill (past Academy Award nominee Oldman), who must make the ultimate choice: negotiate with Hitler at a terrible cost, or rally the nation and fight on against incredible odds. Yorgos Lanthimos has returned with a disturbing thriller inspired by Greek mythology. The Killing of a Sacred Deer is a dark comedy hinging on a extremely individualistic family, whose apparent perfection is cracked by the sinister intentions of a mysterious young man.

Dr. Steven Murphy is a renowned cardiovascular surgeon living in apparently domestic bliss with his ophthalmologist wife Anna and their two ideal children, 12-year-old Bob and 14-year-old Kim. Their idyllic household is lurked on by Martin, an orphaned teenager who Steven has secretly taken under his wing. As Martin begins interfering with Murphy family’s life in increasingly upsetting ways, Steve finds himself in front of a dramatic choice that will inevitably crash everything he has constructed in his life; a scenario that echoes Greek tragedy.

“Eclectic and enjoyable… a bewildering range of instruments”
(English Dance and Song)

‘A Brief History Of Music‘ takes in 600 years of musical history in 90 minutes! Beginning in the Middle Ages and ending up in the 20th century (and incorporating everything in between!) this fun and fast-moving show is a whistle-stop tour of Western musical history.

Featuring long forgotten songs and tunes (not to mention jokes!) GreenMatthews paint a vibrant and vivid picture of our musical DNA, mixing the familiar and the obscure, the raucous and the reflective and the courtly and the commonplace.

The show combines the vigour of the medieval period, the musical intricacy of the Renaissance, the grandeur of the Baroque and the pomp and bombast of Victoriana. Add to that the wit of Blackadder and 1066 And All That and the stage is set for a veritable musical feast!

Complete with a bewildering array of instruments such as virginal, rauschpfeife and lute (and that’s just the first 100 years!) ‘A Brief History of Music‘ uses tunes, songs and humour to take you on a musical journey from which you won’t want to return!

Thank you very much for all your interest - the tickets have been sold out!

Kenley Revival Project 'Women at War' season presents: Amy Johnson: Last Flight Out

An original one-person show inspired by the life of record breaking pilot, Amy Johnson.

"beautifully written, wonderfully human, touching portrayal" (@katierosewindow)
"inventive approach...brave performance" (@pamidiva)

Amy had her ambitions and she flew at them. Born in the year the Wright brothers made their first flight and into an age where flying would capture her heart, Amy lived her life for adventure and the future of aviation.

In 1930 she became the first woman to fly solo from England to Australia. She flew there in a beloved Gipsy Moth called Jason beating the record to India on the way. Amy had dark days and bright ones. We meet her in a world of mixed memories, desires, wishes and ambitions and as we find out about her life we start to see how the pieces fit and the tools Amy used to bring her dreams to reality.

Written and performed by Jenny Lockyer
Directed by Vern Griffiths
Originally developed for Croydonites Festival of New Theatre
Main artwork: The Town That Love Built

www.lastflightout.co.uk

This performance is presented by the Kenley Revival Project. Supported by the National Lottery through the Heritage Lottery Fund, the project aims to preserve and promote the most intact fighter airfield from World War II in partnership with the City of London Corporation, Kenley Airfield Friends Group and Historic England.

The performance is approximately 1 hour and ten minutes long with no interval.

When the Littles go to an orphanage to adopt a new family member, a charming young mouse named Stuart is chosen. While George is initially unwelcoming to his new brother, the family cat, Snowbell, is even less enthusiastic about having a mouse as his “master” and plots to get rid of him. Against these difficulties, Stuart resolves to face them with as much pluck, love and courage as he can muster. In doing so, he shows his beloved new family that great things can truly come in small packages.

Just £5 gets you in and tickets can be booked via www.TheTuesdayNightMusicClub.co.uk or purchased from the bar at The Comrades Club.

Sugarkane evolved from original John O'Leary Band which was established in 2002. In 2009 the name was changed and since then the band has trail blazed an unique and uncompromising brand of blues based music and in the course of it's journey, has both thrilled and challenged audiences wherever it has played. The band's musical foundation lies wholeheartedly in the blues but there is also a hefty mix of jazz, funk, Latin, rock and even reggae to produce a potent individual musical brew. Noted for it's jamming approach, today, Sugarkane is an established and popular attraction on the British blues, rock & jazz scene. The band consists of founder John O'Leary (harmonoica), long term members Jules Fothergill (guitar), Roger Inniss (bass), Jools Grudgings (keys) and Joachim Greve (drums), reinforced by the recent addition of guitarist & composed Steve Wright. As a 6 piece band, it is a breath of fresh air in a genre dominated by guitar/bass/drum trios.

Finding a pigeon hole for this band is impossible! It has been described as " blues harmonica meets The Mahavishnu Orchestra" by Blues Matters magazine and by The Times newspaper as being "sprung like an industrial coil". Sugarkane is a band that will take you on a roller coaster of a ride. Every member of the band is acknowledged by fans and critics alike as being among the very best on their respective instruments playing in Britain at the present time.

Christian Reilly

At the age of 15, Christian Reilly joined a band to get laid. The Salvation Army had different ideas…As former integral part of the Perrier award-winning show Otis Lee Crenshaw and the Black Liars, with comic/songster Rich Hall, Christian's career has taken him around the world three times. On his way, he received accolades at international festivals and numerous network TV credits in the USA, Australia, New Zealand and Britain. Now a solo stand-up performer and playing all the major comedy venues in his own right, Christian uses his dynamic guitar and vocal skills to target histrionic rock bands, musical theatre and morose indie musicians. He recently wrote and performed for 'That Was Then This Is Now' (BBC Radio 2) as musical counterpart to Richard Herring and Emma Kennedy, as well as giving his improvisation skills an outing on Radio 2's 'Jammin'. Christian's comic songs, improvisations, sharp wit and youthful energy have delighted audiences wherever he performs.

"His stand-up is witty and heaving with punchlines…will win over all but the hardest hearts and minds." Chortle

"This genuine, trendy, confident comedian has a natural talent for risky jokes, song and quips which you can't help laughing at! If you get the chance to see Reilly live, do so. He is not to be missed!” Funny.co.uk

Mozart C Minor Mass and Jupiter Symphony

Mar 24, 7:30pm - Mar 24, 9:15pm

St John's, Wimbledon
Spencer Hill
London,  SW19 4NZ Map

A wonderful concert will be taking place in Wimbledon on 24 March!

The Academy Choir Wimbledon and London Mozart Players will together be presenting a glorious programme of Mozart and Haydn at St John's Church, Spencer Hill, Wimbledon at 7.30 pm on Saturday 24 March.

Filled with drama, virtuosity and a clear sense of hope, Mozart's C Minor Mass is a true great - in 2015 Pope Francis commented that one movement - the Et incarnatus est - "is matchless; it lifts you to God!". Brahms observed of Mozart's 39th, 40th and 41st Symphonies that: “I am able to understand ... that Beethoven's first symphony did impress people colossally. But the last three symphonies by Mozart are much more important.” Praise indeed!

Our soloists will be a delight and include the sopranos Soraya Mafi (an ENO Harewood Artist who won the 2016 Susan Chilcott Award and placed second in the 2015 Kathleen Ferrier Award) and Rowan Pierce (winner of the President's Award at the Royal College of Music in 2017 and the Song Prize and First Prize at the inaugural Grange Festival International Singing Competition) alongside tenor Alessandro Fisher (who won the joint first prize at the 2016 Kathleen Ferrier Awards) and bass Thomas D Hopkinson (Royal Northern College of Music, Opera North, Wexford and Loughborough Opera Festivals).

Tickets range in price from just £5 (for well behaved children!) and £10 (for university students) to a top price of £25. Several rows in the top price band will be reserved for use by members of our Friends scheme (which can be joined from £5 per month) - please do see our website or get in touch for further details.

In an English folk scene currently bursting with bold and innovative folk music, English vocal trio Lady Maisery are pushing the boundaries of traditional vocal harmony to a new level, forged from the voices of three of the UK’s most innovative young performers, Hannah James, Hazel Askew and Rowan Rheingans. Whether unearthing a feminist twist hidden in a traditional tale, delivering a poignant anti-war ballad, or showcasing their immense multi-instrumental talents in original compositions that draw on a myriad of musical influences, Lady Maisery are skilful explorers of the power, beauty and vitality of song.

Lady Maisery have received 5-star reviews from publications as diverse as the Financial Times and Songlines Magazine, been nominated for a BBC Radio 2 Folk Award, appeared on Radio 4‘s Woman’s Hour and rated top of Radio 3‘s Late Junction albums of the summer.

Interpreting traditional and contemporary folk songs, ranging from the intimacy of three voices in harmony, to a full band sound of accordion, fiddle, harp, banjo and Hannah’s award winning clog dancing and foot percussion. Also breaking new ground as one of the first UK groups to explore the tradition of didlding or tune singing, which has nearly died out in England, but is still prevalent in Scandinavia and other parts of Europe. Lady Maisery aim to create striking music, telling stories that need to be heard, often with social, political and feminist resonances.

"What was evident here, is the performer is quality, his mockery, and the excellent use of accents combined with clever voice-over interaction; is a performer with masses of talent." - Fringe Review

Andrew Ashong brings his blend of fresh, soulful music back to Hideaway. Transmitting his sweet, deep grooves alongside his live band, this will be a truly memorable live two set performance from the acclaimed London-Ghanaian musician.

"It's soul music for people who have been dismayed by most of the major developments in soul music of the last two, even three, decades." The Guardian

“Ashong… chooses to retrospectively immerse in the ethics of true music.” Clash

Andrew Ashong, hailing from Forest Hill by way of Ghana has been titled as an essential listen by many music blogs in the past year. The Ghanaian-British artist had his first solo release on Theo Parrish’s label, Sound Signature. The title track, ‘Flowers’ won ‘Track of the Year’ at Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide Awards 2013.

When asked, what is behind the excitement of this record, Parrish replied “The funk. Right under my nose were all the essential elements: simplicity, drive, and honesty gained from heartfelt experience in Andrew Ashong’s music. It’s more than just that. It’s human.”

The Edwin Starr Band

Apr 6, 7:00pm - Apr 6, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Celebrating a true soul great... The legendary Edwin Starr recorded some of the greatest soul tunes of all time (including 'War', 'Twenty Five Miles' and 'Agent Double O Soul'). Join his brother Angelo Starr and The Team as we celebrate some of the most iconic tunes from the golden age of soul and the music of one of the all time 'feel good' voices and honour the 15th anniversary of his passing.
Originally Edwin Starr's band and fronted by the USA born Motown artiste until his sad early death in April 2003. The Team are now proud to keep Edwin's music & name alive with his younger brother Angelo as the lead vocalist in The Team. Put together in 1982, the band approached 'Build Me Up Buttercup' vocalist Clem Curtis with a view to working together. Clem at that time did not need a band but he had a friend who did - the late, great Motown artist Edwin Starr.

Together with Edwin they have been presented with awards by Blues and Soul Magazine, whose readership for two consecutive years voted them 'UK Live Act Of The Year'; and alongside James Brown and Billy Paul have twice been honoured at the prestigious European Diamond Awards for Live Music. With Edwin's passing in April 2003, younger brother Angelo, an original member of The Team (and who has also worked with Alexander O'Neal and more recently Lemar), has taken over on lead vocals, bringing a sense of continuity but more notably, a new energy; an energy that could only be generated by dedicated and well-travelled musicians and singers, performing for years with soul greats and soaking up the influence.

On their first visit to The Club last year they played to a packed house that gave them standing ovation after standing ovation. When you see them you will understand why - this is one show you just have to be at!

Following a sell-out tour last year, Geoff Achison returns to the UK in 2018 for a run of 33 shows at festivals, music clubs, theatres and arts centres. He is supported by his UK Souldiggers - internationally acclaimed drummer, Sam Kelly (Cymande, Roger Chapman, Gary Moore, Chaka Khan, Madeline Bell) keys man, Paul Jobson (Boney M, Hamish Stewart, Linda Lewis, Bad Manners, Noel McCalla and the Anti Nowhere League) plus bassman, Andy Hodge (“We Will Rock You”, Raw Glory, Bootleg Blondie).

From the deep south of Australia, his exciting blend of raw blues and funky grooves has created scores of devoted fans around the world. He was chosen as one of the “Top Ten Hottest New Guitarists” by Guitar Player Magazine and was included in the “Top 100+ Guitarists You Should Know” roster.

He is a versatile artist who can deliver a complete show with nothing more than his soulful voice and virtuosic acoustic guitar style but is also a highly regarded electric guitarist compared favourably to Jeff Beck and Warren Haynes, able to deliver the full blues-rock experience with his outstanding combo, The Souldiggers. Geoff is also a keen and expert improviser and has been invited on stage to jam with big names such as the legendary Allman Brothers Band, Hot Tuna and many others.

Talented Vienna-born singer-songwriter Lil Maxine and her jazzy trio make their UK debut performance at Hideaway.

"Music that is seductive, expressive, always pared-down, yet rich in 'song-ful' details." Jazzthing Review Plus

Together with her rhythm section – Oliver Steger on bass and Konstantin Kräutler on drums – Lil Maxine conjures up splendid jazz soundscapes for her voice as the trio celebrates the art of storytelling, not just lyrically but also musically.

‘A Little Girl’s Love Songs’ is an impressive, multi-faceted debut album that has already attracted high praise in Europe and is now scheduled for a UK release.

The title of the album should not be taken literally: there is nothing small or girlish about it, instead balladic-epic sounds flirt with tight grooves whilst pulsating expanses, driving beats and rolling bass lines carry the songs creating the perfect platform for Lil Maxine’s velvet voice to permeate each track and tell timeless stories of love, longing and hope.

Once child slaves in Indian circuses, Sheetal and Saraswoti decide to reclaim their skills forming together Nepal’s first circus. A documentary about inspirational young people who have challenged social stigma against trafficked women, followed by a panel discussion.

--

Even When I Fall is a feature documentary about Kathmandu Circus, the first and only circus in Nepal, set up by two survivors of child trafficking.

Sheetal and Saraswoti are Nepalese child trafficking survivors who met as teenagers in a Kathmandu refuge after being rescued from corrupt Indian circuses. As they take the bold step of bringing an unrecognised art form to of Nepal, they simultaneously challenge the deep-seated stigma against trafficked women.

This intimate, beautiful film harnesses the visual power of circus to give a unique perspective into the complex world of human trafficking. This is a film about hopes, dreams and inspirational young people who are working against the status quo to create positive change in their own societies.

Followed by panel discussion, in partnership with CCAT and AFRUCA

Croydon Community Against Trafficking (CCAT) is a voluntary coalition of people from all walks of life who can no longer stay silent and tolerate the oppression and enslavement of people, mainly women and often under-age girls, that exists in our community.

Africans Unite Against Child Abuse (AFRUCA) was established in May 2001 in the aftermath of the deaths of children like Jude Akapa, Victoria Climbie and Damilola Taylor in the UK. The organisation was set up as a platform for advocating for the welfare of African children and has since gained recognition for its role in speaking out on key issues affecting African children in the UK.

The charity has been at the forefront of efforts to denounce the trafficking of African children to the country as well as highlighting the issue of the branding of children as witches or as possessed by evil spirits. It has drawn attention to both phenomena through organising activities, and engaging at different levels with policy-makers, other NGOs and within the African community.

Muddy Waters Remembered - Annual Celebration of the Music of Muddy Waters

Muddy Waters Remembered - Annual Celebration of the Music of Muddy Waters

Apr 19, 7:00pm - Apr 19, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

This big annual celebration of the music of the most influential blues man of all time returns to Hideaway. Join the great and good of British Blues as they pay their respects to the man who bought us "Mojo Working" and "Hoochie Coochie Man", influencing and shaping music for generations to come.
The John O'Leary and Alan Glen All Stars lead proceedings - serving up great tunes from the Muddy Waters songbook and being joined by a stack of special guests. This is always a fantastic night of music and fun with everyone performing being united by one thing... a deep rooted love of the music of MISTER McKINLEY MORGANFIELD.

John O’Leary
John was one of the pioneers of the art of the blues harmonica in the UK. Originally from Ireland, John's family was part of the massive migration to England in the aftermath of World War 2. In London's thriving jazz clubs of the 1960's he first heard blues harp player Cyril Davies with Alexis Korner's Blues Inc.

John bought his first instrument in 1962 and learned to play by listening and watching Davies. Inevitably, he discovered the great masters of the blues harmonica; Sonny Boy Williamson No.1, Sonny Terry, Little Walter, Noah Lewis, James Cotton, Shakey Horton and Junior Wells. John's career has seen his involvement with numerous bands and musicians over four decades. Beginning in 1965 with Savoy Brown's Blues Band through to the present day John O'Leary & Sugarkane, John has continued to maintain a prominent position on the British and European blues scene.

Alan Glen
Alan Glen is a British blues harmonica player and guitarist, best known for his work with The Yardbirds, Nine Below Zero, Little Axe, and his own bands, The Barcodes and The Incredible Blues Puppies.

Glen started playing harmonica after seeing Muddy Waters, and the 'American Folk-Blues Festivals' which visited London in the late 1960's and early 1970's, his early influences being Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and Junior Wells. Early bands he was involved with were Crowjane Bluesband, The Radical Sheiks and Brothers Grimm, before going on to join Nine Below Zero (1991–1995), and The Yardbirds (1996–2003 and 2008–2009).

Glen has played on over 50 albums and recorded/performed with Alannah Myles, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Slash, John Mayall, Steve Lukather, and has also recorded six albums with Little Axe.

The John O'Leary / Alan Glen Allstars featuring:
John O'Leary (Savoy Brown / John Dummer Blues Band), Alan Glen (Yardbirds, Nine Below Zero, Little Axe), Alan Vincent (Shakey Vick Band), Tim Penn (Gordon Smith, Kevin Coyne), Glynn Evans (Martha & The Vandellas, Ray Davies), Peter Miles (Radical Sheiks, Jo-Anne Kelly)

Bernstein’s exhilarating jazz-inspired setting of the Hebrew psalms for chorus and soloists, commissioned by Chichester Cathedral, and Copland’s much-loved ballet suite Appalachian Spring provide an inspirational contrast to Fauré‘s ever-popular Requiem and Cantique de Jean Racine.

The Royal Choral Society has been performing the great choral masterpieces ever since its formation for the opening of the Royal Albert Hall in 1871, including the UK premières of Verdi¹s Requiem in 1875, and Dvořák’s Stabat Mater in 1884, both concerts conducted by their composers.

London,  SW16 2BF Map

UNDER 16s admitted FREE - Please let us know how many children will be attending in the Comments Box section of the booking form.

"Opening up with The Jive Aces, the energy level quickly soars through the roof as the band starts stomping with some infectious, high-speed swing music that parallels the energy of 50s rock 'n' roll with all the silk and glamour of '40s swing. Truly modern, and making no claims otherwise, the band seems to be on a caffeine high as they shoot and dance around the notes with such clarity. I’ll give it an A." In Music We Trust - CD review

“Jive Aces rocked us, literally. If they were playing at any event they would raise the roof with their quirky banana suits and energetic moves.” Dean “Midas” Maynard - Huffington Post

The Jive Aces

Britain’s Got Talent stars, The Jive Aces, are the UK’s No.1 Jive & Swing band. Renowned for their high energy jump jive music and spectacular stage show, they famously put a grumpy Simon Cowell in a good mood.

The band features songs made famous by greats such as Louis Prima, Bobby Darin, Cab Calloway, Dean Martin, Louis Armstrong and Sammy Davis Jr, as well as some superb originals. This extremely in-demand sextet has worked with John Travolta, Van Morrison, The Proclaimers, Chick Corea, Keely Smith and even Status Quo and have performed for HM The Queen and HRH Prince Philip.

Having become the first ever band to reach the semi finals of Britain's Got Talent in 2012 following up with a performance for Her Majesty The Queen as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and performances for both the Olympic and Paralympic celebrations, The Jive Aces have truly established themselves as the UK's top Jive & Swing band.

Together for over a decade, this extremely popular six piece group have performed at thousands of festivals, theatres and events throughout the UK, Europe and USA, as well as Japan, Israel, South Africa, Morrocco and the Caribbean, 30 countries in all. The Jive Aces are renowned for their high energy jump jive music (the exciting sound where swing meets rock ‘n roll) and spectacular stage show.

They combine a mixture of fresh arrangements of swing/jive/R&B classics - songs made famous by such greats as Louis Prima, Cab Calloway, Bobby Darin, Louis Armstrong, Dean Martin, Big Joe Turner and Sammy Davis Jnr - along with a selection of superb swinging originals taken from their studio albums.

The Jive Aces have worked with many of the top names in the business, including John Travolta, Status Quo, Isaac Hayes, Van Morrison, Count Basie Orchestra, Keely Smith, Priscilla Presley, Buddy Greco, Kirstie Allie, Kenny Ball, Chuck Berry, Tony Christie and Lee Evans to name just a few.

With their high energy music, bright stage suits, wild stage show, irresistible humor and sheer professionalism, the Jive Aces will quickly get any audience on their feet - or dancing in their seat! Each and every show is guaranteed to go with a swing!
