// ABOUT SETH PIMLOTT
'The films I make have a lyrical or narrative element that weaves
together the experiences and contributions of various people. This is
analogous to the way I ‘make’ my films too, through innovative
technical apparatus and elaborate hand-built sets, and a theatrical mode of presentation. I often work with a mix of amateurs and professionals, taking, for example, Lizzie Borden’s Born in Flames and early films by Derek Jarman as a touchstone for the kind of energy I want my films to posses. This collective spirit of making results in films that are more than the sum of their parts, especially when dealing with something as precious as feelings of identity and belonging and personal narratives. In this way, the process involves creating a community for which the film is meaningful, to which the film belongs, and that it represents.'

Seth's recent projects include 'A Concatenation of Rhythms', two films made with the Polish and Latin American diasporas in south London as Gasworks' participatory artist in residence, and 'Season of doubt' a film made with Ladan Hussein from the band Cold Specks, that was selected for New Contemporaries in 2017. He was a recipient of the Pete Lloyd Lewis Award at Chisenhale Art Place in 2016.

Lily Dior

Discovered by the late great Jackie Orszaczky as a teenager, performing a show she wrote and produced on the life of Billie Holiday, Lily became a seminal member of Sydney’s hottest Soul/Funk outfit, ‘The Godmothers’, wowing audiences with her electric stage presence and powerful voice.

“If you see only one local band this year, make sure you catch this shimmering and wonderful soul funk act” (Bruce Elder, SMH)

Janette Mason (keys)

If there's an explosion of curly red hair buzzing around at the business end of our beautiful Yamaha grand piano, and a room bursting with musically induced grins, then you can be sure it's Janette Mason at the ivories.

Appointed as Hideaway's first Musical Director in 2012, Janette's talents as a producer, arranger and band leader have left a distinctive and extremely popular mark on Hideaway's in-house productions, a series of sell-out shows that include Showtime Presents Bond and Wall to Wall: Bowie.

It's A Wonderful Life - Christmas Community Takeover

Dec 17, 1:30pm - Dec 17, 5:00pm

Holy Innocents, 192A Selhurst Road SE25 6XX Map

Dir: Frank Capra. USA 1947. 95 mins. Cert U

We are celebrating Christmas with the second event in our brand new Community Takeover strand! Bring your loved ones for a special matinee screening of Christmas masterpiece, IT'S A WONDERFUL LIFE (1947), as voted by the South Norwood community.

George Bailey never got a chance to fulfill his life's ambitions of exploring the world. As he watches his friends and family become success stories, he gives up his dreams for the good of his town. When a financial error drives him to contemplate ending his life, an angel is sent from Heaven to show him what life would have been like if he had never existed.

The film was suggested by community members Rose Sage-Morrish and Jennifer Bowling:

"The film to me is about support, living life and accepting challenges and struggles head-on, as they will make you a stronger person." - Jennifer

"Watching this Capra Classic has been a family tradition for as long as I can remember. Seeing it on the big screen & sharing this moment with others will be a wonderful gift indeed!" - Rose

Get into the Christmas spirit and arrive early for a special workshop for all ages with Blooming Desires and a visit from our very own Santa.

The screening will take place in the Holy Innocent’s heated church hall, and a licensed bar will be available serving mulled wine, mince pies and other festive treats.

Jazz Jamaica - Christmas Special

Jazz Jamaica - Christmas Special

Dec 22, 7:00pm - Dec 22, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Bassist and bandleader Gary Crosby brings Jazz Jamaica back to Hideaway for a festive Christmas special! Mixing up jazz and ska classics, bringing in some reggae vibes and performing with a swing and zeal that has made them festival favourites around the world, Jazz Jamaica have rightly earned their reputation as 'one of the UK's leading good-time bands' (The Independent).

“Jazz Jamaica should be permanent ambassadors to the United Nations of Good Times.” Cheltenham International Jazz Festival

In 1991, inspired by the rhythms of traditional Jamaican music and the largely improvisational nature of jazz, original Jazz Warrior and veteran jazz double bassist, Gary Crosby, turned a musical concept into a joyful reality. Crosby's concept was to create a quintessential fusion of mento, ska, reggae and jazz, playing classic and modern jazz standards alongside Jamaican folksongs. The result was Jazz Jamaica.

Since its realisation, Crosby has developed the Jazz Jamaica concept by introducing a stream of talented young jazz musicians, so increasing the size of the pool of Jazz Jamaicans, and enabling him to push the boundaries of the music played. Collectively, Crosby and his musicians represent the finest exponents of this unique musical fusion known as skazz, a fusion loved and appreciated by everyone, of all ages and colours around the globe. In 2002, Jazz Jamaica All Stars were winners of the BBC Radio Jazz Award for Best Band.

Crosby’s leadership and drive continue to ensure the evolution of Jazz Jamaica – a process that is encapsulated by the recent headline grabbing collaborative project “Catch A Fire” that saw the band join a 240 voice choir, the Urban Soul Orchestra and Brinsley Forde (Aswad) in a celebration of the music of Bob Marley at the Royal Festival Hall this Summer.

Stunning soulful jazz from this American singer-songwriter who has already collaborated and recorded with the Grammy nominated Snarky Puppy, opened for the legendary Mavis Staples and performed live sessions for JazzFM – just a few of the notable stepping stones in the rapid rise of this amazing vocal talent.

Judi Jackson is a multi-talented actor and jazz vocalist from Virginia who, aged 14, was fortunate enough to meet Wynton Marsalis at the Jefferson Center performance hall after a show. He sent her a box of music the following Christmas that became the seed of inspiration for her development as a jazz vocalist. She began listening to and studying the sounds of Blossom Dearie, Billie Holliday, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald, and Mahalia Jackson, amongst many other greats. She continued studying over the next several years and started gaining more experience as a performer by opening for acts such as Mavis Staples. Shortly thereafter she released her first album, “Crashing down” with Judi and the Giants, on the Music Lab's label. Judi has shared the stage with Snarky Puppy, and recorded her original piece, “Only Love”, with the Grammy award winning group.

NYE Soul and Groove Party feat. Ray Simpson

NYE Soul and Groove Party feat. Ray Simpson

Dec 31, 7:00pm - Jan 1, 1:00am

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

It’s New Year’s Eve and time for a big SOUL and GROOVE party with our special guest, UK soul man extraordinaire Ray Simpson (Cymande, Soul II Soul, Incognito and more) serving up two sets of stone cold soul classics and dance floor fillers as we say hello to 2018 in style here in SW16!

Ticket price includes a glass of bubbly on arrival and a 4 course meal.

Ray Simpson is a British based recording artist who was inspired by the soulful sounds of Motown, Stax, Atlantic Records, Philadelphia International and others, which led him to follow his dreams and achieve a career as a musician.

Ray went on to develop a varied solo career as a vocalist, producer and songwriter, writing for himself and other popular artists such as Maxi Priest, Sugar Minott and Al Campbell to name a few.

In 1984 Ray signed recording and publishing deals with Island Records and Blue Mountain Music, and started to actively explore soul and funk music. He collaborated with Jean Paul Maunick (Bluey), of Incognito, to record vocals on a project produced by Maunick and also toured with Incognito.

In 1989 Ray was signed by Circa Records and recorded his self-titled debut album ‘Ray Simpson’, produced by celebrated American producer Michael J Powell (whose production credits include work with Anita Baker, Randy Crawford among others).

Over the years Ray has worked with Will Downing, Jocelyn Brown, Loose Ends, Maysa Leak and Caron Wheeler and was a featured soloist with Soul II Soul on their album ‘Time For Change’ on which he penned the single ‘Pleasuredome‘.

Ray’s connection with Cymande dates back to the origin of the band in the 70’s, when as a young schoolboy he would watch the band practice in their Brixton basement and thereafter follow their progress with great interest through the connection between his family and the family of Sam Kelly and Derrick Gibbs. That connection was made complete as Ray joined the newly reformed Cymande, touring the US with the band in 2016.

Joining Ray on stage will be Sam Kelly (drums, Cymande), Ray Carless (sax, Cymande, Incognito), Richard Sadler (bass, Kinks, Paul Weller Neil Cowley Trio), Paul Jobson (keys, Chaka Khan, Omar, Joss Stone), Michael ‘Lally’ Carey (guitar) and Kevin Davy (trumpet, Cymande, Finlay Quaye).

Aliki Krikidi // Babette Semmer // Grant Foster // Ben Westley Clarke // Denzil Forrester // Lucy Stein // David Harrison // Steven Allan // Melissa Kime // Vanessa Mitter // Jack Catling // Robin Bale // Stuart Brisley

Curated by Vanessa Mitter and Ben Westley Clarke

“In a world that has really been turned on its head, truth is a moment of falsehood” – Guy Debord

“There is nothing funny about Halloween. This sarcastic festival reflects, rather, an infernal demand for revenge by children on the adult world” – Jean Baudrillard

The ubiquity of photography and advertising and our involuntary immersion in the mediated world assembled by it, demand a creative human response. How can we live, uninhibited, when constantly bombarded by the instructive and the inauthentic? How can we know embodied, unselfconscious experience in the society of images and spectacle? Perhaps a solution lies in bearing witness to its cacophonic multiplicity of truths. Perhaps the highly personalised, playful nature of the activity of painting confronts its tyranny directly, with its antidote.

Painters transform their childhood impulses to shriek, taunt, sing and run wild into vociferous, effusive experimentation. Like ecstatic bambinos, clutching watermelon slices and plastic axes, faces are painted like skulls; they play, unbounded, as a matter of course. Wielding paint, they throw themselves, cackling, into the dance of art and life. The tradition of painting goes back and back. They invoke their ancestors and invite the dead to dance with them, their frisky rebellion allowing modernity to be reimagined as anything other than drab. Beneath the dull concrete of the everyday lies the tropical beach of expression. Sweetness doesn’t just emerge out of nowhere. It has to be willed into existence.

All of the painters in this exhibition are ‘painters of modern life’. The life impulse coexists with the death impulse. The painters bear witness, with an inextinguishable verve and energy, like spirits walking amongst the living. They have one foot in the grave. It dangles precariously. ‘No, no, the work of art is not destined for the generations of children to come. It’s offered to the innumerable dead. Who approve. Or refuse it‘ 1

Frivolous Convulsions is an exhibition which collides carnivalesque and celebratory renditions of modern life. From effusive expressionism to calculated documentary; from the folksy to the ultramodern, the clash of idioms and practices proposes the impulse towards painting as an essential social phenomenon. Each painting simultaneously addresses a need to converse and interact, and a need for individualism and boldness. In dialogue with the dead painters of history, the artists continue relentlessly in their search to marry storytelling with formal, pictorial invention.

Susan Cadogan

Susan Cadogan

Jan 12, 9:00pm - Jan 12, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

We are excited to welcome back the great Susan Cadogan to Hideaway! One of Jamaica's best-loved singers of ‘Hurt So Good’, ‘Nice & Easy’, ‘Piece Of My Heart’ - from the ground-breaking tracks and solid gold hits she recorded with Lee "Scratch" Perry at the height of his seminal Black Ark Studio heyday through to Top Of The Pops appearances and lovers rock classics, Susan’s recorded output has never been less than sensational and her live performances remain truly mesmerizing.
With a delicate voice that shimmers between childlike innocence and smoldering sexuality, Susan Cadogan's vocals were the perfect expression of lovers rock. Surprisingly, she never intended to sing professionally, and thus her music career has been sporadic but, such was her talent, Cadogan was rightly crowned the Queen of Lovers Rock.

Born Alison Anne Cadogan on November 2, 1951, in Kingston, Jamaica, she came from a musical family, and her mother had in fact released a number of gospel records during her childhood. The family emigrated to Belize in the mid-'50s, but returned to Jamaica at the end of decade, where Cadogan continued her schooling. Upon graduation, she took a job working in the library at the University of the West Indies in Mona. And there she might have remained, had it not been for DJ Jerry Lewis, the boyfriend of one of Cadogan's friends.

Impressed by her voice, the DJ took her into the JBC studio in 1974 to record his own composition, 'Love My Life', which he produced himself. Producer Lee "Scratch" Perry was at JBC that same day and was also mightily impressed with Cadogan's talent. Perry swiftly swooped in and took the singer under his wing. He renamed her Susan, and set to work in the studio, where he had her record an album's worth of cover songs.

The first fruits of these sessions was the rousing 'Hurts So Good', a cover of Millie Jackson's soul classic. Even though the single, released on Perry's own Perries label, included such musicians as the Zap Pow horn section and bassist Boris Gardiner, it received virtually no attention from the Jamaican public. It was a different story in Britain, where Perry had licensed the single. After dominating at 1974's Notting Hill Carnival, an astute remix quickly flew to the top of the reggae chart. That success prompted the bigger Magnet label to license the single and by March, "Hurts" was sitting in the Top Five of the U.K. national chart.

Cadogan was soon on her way to London, where she made several national TV appearances. While there, the singer inked a deal with Magnet, prompting Perry to license his own recordings with her to a variety of small U.K. labels. Amazingly enough, none of these singles charted; however in 1976, Perry handed all his tapes of Cadogan to Trojan, who released them as the sublime Hurts So Good album.

On 8th November '16 at The Tuesday Night Music Club Matt Long of Catfish invited a young man to guest with him on stage. That young man was Marcus Praestgaard-Stevens and since that date the world has sat up and taken notice of his extraordinary talents. After many guest appearances with other luminaries he went ahead and formed a band called Crossfire. We had the pleasure of hosting their first live appearance in a double bill on 19th September '17 and were blown away. So it seemed appropriate to invite them back and give them a whole night to show us what they can do. The perfect time to do that? Our first show of 2018!

Jan 23, 8:30pm - Jan 23, 11:00pm

Just £5 gets you in and tickets can be booked via www.TheTuesdayNightMusicClub.co.uk or purchased from the bar at The Comrades Club.

He and his band blew us away last year so we just had to get him back. And with the release of his album 'Blues To My Soul' his popularity is soaring even higher.

Just read this biography and you'll know why you just MUST see John Verity!

In his long career, John Verity has supported legendary artists like Jimi Hendrix, Mountain, Canned Heat and Janis Joplin, has played with Russ Ballard, Colin Blunstone, Keith Emerson, Ringo Starr and Mike Rutherford and was in the rock group Argent from 1973 to 1976.

His credentials as a guitarist, producer and singer / songwriter, today make him one of the leading lights of Rock and Blues. Growing up in Bradford, Yorkshire, John began his career playing with local groups, before landing a full-time professional gig, performing 7/7 throughout the UK and Europe, playing R&B and Chicago Blues, as well as contemporary hits.

By 1970, 21 year-old John was living and working in the US with his band ‘Tunnel’, doing high profile support slots with Jimi Hendrix, Mountain, Canned Heat, Savoy Brown and Janis Joplin. Tunnel soon became the first John Verity Band and in Spring 1973 the band released their first, self-titled album. Touring in support of the album, John was asked by Rod Argent to front his band, following the departure of Russ Ballard.

John joined Argent in late 1973 and toured and recorded extensively until 1976 when Argent disbanded. John formed the group Phoenix with Bob Henrit and Jim Rodford and produced 3 albums, also producing albums for Charlie and Saxon. Phoenix eventually broke up and John spent the next few years recording and producing with artists including Motorhead, Tank, Russ Ballard, Colin Blunstone, Brian Connolly, John Parr, BowWowWow and The Searchers until late 1981, when PRT Records persuaded him to record a new album under his own name.

By this time John had built his own studio and was now in full-time record production. The 1982 album ‘Verity’ was highly-acclaimed in the UK, Europe and the US and John found himself in demand, collaborating with Mike Rutherford, Keith Emerson and Greg Lake. Two subsequent albums were also well-received and, having turned down offers to join MSG, Ted Nugent and Asia, John recorded with the Zombies, before touring with John Coghlan (Status Quo) in Diesel. In 1994, John guested at the Manchester Festival “Fender Stratocaster 40th Anniversary” concert, alongside Sonny Curtis, Frankie Miller and Rory Gallagher, and in 2000 John opened for the Jools Holland Sex, Jazz and Rock ’n’ Roll tour at Manchester opera House, Birmingham Symphony Hall and the Royal Albert Hall.

And so it continues... Do not miss this opportunity to see The John Verity Band up close and personal!

Just £5 gets you in and tickets can be booked via www.TheTuesdayNightMusicClub.co.uk or purchased from the bar at The Comrades Club.

Just one listen to the album 'Mississippi MacDonald & Steve Bailey with The Soul Fixers' had us checking for dates we could see them. But with Steve Bailey living in the USA there were none... Then we heard he'd be making a lightning visit to The UK in January and our schedule was shuffled to make sure that at least one time you could experience this album live!

Here's what BluesMagazine.NL had to say: “Mississippi MacDonald is, despite the moniker, an English bluesman, and a guy with his feet, soul and spirit firmly rooted in the US southern blues music tradition. Joined here by US harp player, Steve Bailey, he has turned out an excellent, searing album that simply rocks and roars along from start to finish……one of those releases that come as a welcome surprise in an overcrowded blues music world these days, with genuinely top-notch writing, musicianship and grasp of just what makes a damn, fine release.”

The album, featuring nine new Mississippi cuts was recorded at LSound Studios, London, and in Seattle, WA. With an all star band featuring US harmonica ace Steve Bailey, the Soul Fixers, and award winning UK Americana Artist Emma Jane, Mississippi pays homage to his blues, soul and country roots and on three tracks to greats OV Wright, James Booker and Frankie Miller.

All you’ve gotta do is put a copy on, crack open a cold one and turn it up to 11.

This truly is a one off experience that you just have to be at!

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Soul Street returns for two nights with vocalist Donna Gardier and an all-star soul collective born out of SW16 with MD Janette Mason, as they serve up their good time tunes with heady mix of choice jazz-funk, rare groove and disco cuts. An absolutely all star band, this is one funky night you won't want to miss.
Donna Gardier

Donna Gardier started her career as a solo artiste, signed to Virgin records. She released the album ‘Real Thing' and enjoyed hit success with her singles 'I’ll Be There’ and ‘Real Thing'. Donna became front woman for the London based dance music outfit Raw Stylus and toured the world with Sting on his ‘Sacred Love’ tour.

She has been a vocalist for many artists including West Life, Tom Jones, Boyzone, Rasaan Paterson, JT Taylor, Freddie Jackson, Don Blackman, and Kenny Burk and is currently touring with Billy Ocean.
Janette Mason (MD/keys)

If there's an explosion of curly red hair buzzing around at the business end of our beautiful Yamaha grand piano, and a room bursting with musically induced grins, then you can be sure it's Janette Mason at the ivories.

Appointed as Hideaway's first Musical Director in 2012, Janette's talents as a producer, arranger and band leader have left a distinctive and extremely popular mark on Hideaway's in-house productions, a series of sell-out shows that include Showtime Presents Bond and Wall to Wall: Bowie.

Also a talented composer, her Trio's 2010 CD, Alien Left Hand, was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Award and her work also features on the soundtrack of award-winning independent film Ruby Blue, starring Bob Hoskins.

Her credits as an elite keyboard player include Oasis, Seal, Pulp and Robert Wyatt, as well as the cream of the UK's jazz talent including Clare Martin and Ian Shaw.

Cranstoun’s vocal style has been compared to the likes of Jackie Wilson and Sam Cooke, while his music is a pure blend of northern soul, Motown and vintage pop. With hugely catchy hooks and a contemporary sound that also captures the look and feel of a golden era in soul and R&B, Cranstoun’s sound is full of the classic energy and verve of a bygone era but brought up to the present day, prompting Chris Evans to describe him as “A squeeze of The Bee Gees, a bit of Billy Joel, a dash of Dean Freidman, and a ripple of Rodriguez.”

From South London busker to supporting Little Richard in Las Vegas followed by a major record deal with Warners, the rise of this soulful singer who finds his roots in the late fifties and early sixties golden era of music has been spectacular securing him a host of radio play and TV appearances.

Mozart C Minor Mass and Jupiter Symphony

Mozart C Minor Mass and Jupiter Symphony

Mar 24, 7:30pm - Mar 24, 9:15pm

St John's, Wimbledon
Spencer Hill
London,  SW19 4NZ Map

The Academy Choir Wimbledon is very excited to be presenting a wonderful programme of Mozart and Haydn alongside the London Mozart Players. This concert will be taking place at St John's Church, Spencer Hill, Wimbedon at 7.30 pm on Saturday 24 March.

This will be a really wonderful concert - Mozart's C Minor Mass is rightly numbered among the greatest choral works ever written whilst his 41st and final symphony is regarded by many commentators as at least one of his finest. Haydn's Te Deum complements this programme very thoughtfully - few write music as invigorating as Haydn - and will open the concert.

Filled with drama, virtuosity and a clear sense of hope, Mozart's C Minor Mass is a true great - in 2015 Pope Francis commented that one movement - the Et incarnatus est - "is matchless; it lifts you to God!". Brahms observed of Mozart's 39th, 40th and 41st Symphonies that: “I am able to understand ... that Beethoven's first symphony did impress people colossally. But the last three symphonies by Mozart are much more important.” Praise indeed!

The Academy Choir Wimbledon - under renowned Music Director Matthew Best - is developing a reputation as one of the finest choirs of its sort in London and for the first time is collaborating with the London Mozart Players (the UK's longest established chamber orchestra with an outstanding reputation developed through consistent excellence). Our soloists will be a delight and include the sopranos Soraya Mafi (an ENO Harewood Artist who won the 2016 Susan Chilcott Award and placed second in the 2015 Kathleen Ferrier Award) and Rowan Pierce (winner of the President's Award at the Royal College of Music in 2017 and the Song Prize and First Prize at the inaugural Grange Festival International Singing Competition) alongside tenor Alessandro Fisher (who won the joint first prize at the 2016 Kathleen Ferrier Awards).

Tickets range in price from just £5 (for well behaved children!) to a top price of £25. Several rows in the top price band will be reserved for use by members of our Friends scheme (which can be joined from £5 per month) - please do see our website for further details.

Muddy Waters Remembered - Annual Celebration of the Music of Muddy Waters

Apr 19, 7:00pm - Apr 19, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

This big annual celebration of the music of the most influential blues man of all time returns to Hideaway. Join the great and good of British Blues as they pay their respects to the man who bought us "Mojo Working" and "Hoochie Coochie Man", influencing and shaping music for generations to come.
The John O'Leary and Alan Glen All Stars lead proceedings - serving up great tunes from the Muddy Waters songbook and being joined by a stack of special guests. This is always a fantastic night of music and fun with everyone performing being united by one thing... a deep rooted love of the music of MISTER McKINLEY MORGANFIELD.

John O’Leary
John was one of the pioneers of the art of the blues harmonica in the UK. Originally from Ireland, John's family was part of the massive migration to England in the aftermath of World War 2. In London's thriving jazz clubs of the 1960's he first heard blues harp player Cyril Davies with Alexis Korner's Blues Inc.

John bought his first instrument in 1962 and learned to play by listening and watching Davies. Inevitably, he discovered the great masters of the blues harmonica; Sonny Boy Williamson No.1, Sonny Terry, Little Walter, Noah Lewis, James Cotton, Shakey Horton and Junior Wells. John's career has seen his involvement with numerous bands and musicians over four decades. Beginning in 1965 with Savoy Brown's Blues Band through to the present day John O'Leary & Sugarkane, John has continued to maintain a prominent position on the British and European blues scene.

Alan Glen
Alan Glen is a British blues harmonica player and guitarist, best known for his work with The Yardbirds, Nine Below Zero, Little Axe, and his own bands, The Barcodes and The Incredible Blues Puppies.

Glen started playing harmonica after seeing Muddy Waters, and the 'American Folk-Blues Festivals' which visited London in the late 1960's and early 1970's, his early influences being Little Walter, Sonny Boy Williamson and Junior Wells. Early bands he was involved with were Crowjane Bluesband, The Radical Sheiks and Brothers Grimm, before going on to join Nine Below Zero (1991–1995), and The Yardbirds (1996–2003 and 2008–2009).

Glen has played on over 50 albums and recorded/performed with Alannah Myles, Jeff Beck, Steve Vai, Slash, John Mayall, Steve Lukather, and has also recorded six albums with Little Axe.

The John O'Leary / Alan Glen Allstars featuring:
John O'Leary (Savoy Brown / John Dummer Blues Band), Alan Glen (Yardbirds, Nine Below Zero, Little Axe), Alan Vincent (Shakey Vick Band), Tim Penn (Gordon Smith, Kevin Coyne), Glynn Evans (Martha & The Vandellas, Ray Davies), Peter Miles (Radical Sheiks, Jo-Anne Kelly)

"Opening up with The Jive Aces, the energy level quickly soars through the roof as the band starts stomping with some infectious, high-speed swing music that parallels the energy of 50s rock 'n' roll with all the silk and glamour of '40s swing. Truly modern, and making no claims otherwise, the band seems to be on a caffeine high as they shoot and dance around the notes with such clarity. I’ll give it an A." In Music We Trust - CD review

“Jive Aces rocked us, literally. If they were playing at any event they would raise the roof with their quirky banana suits and energetic moves.” Dean “Midas” Maynard - Huffington Post

The Jive Aces

Britain’s Got Talent stars, The Jive Aces, are the UK’s No.1 Jive & Swing band. Renowned for their high energy jump jive music and spectacular stage show, they famously put a grumpy Simon Cowell in a good mood.

This extremely in-demand sextet has worked with John Travolta, Van Morrison, The Proclaimers, Chick Corea, Keely Smith and even Status Quo and have performed for HM The Queen and HRH Prince Philip.

Having become the first ever band to reach the semi finals of Britain's Got Talent in 2012 following up with a performance for Her Majesty The Queen as part of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and performances for both the Olympic and Paralympic celebrations, The Jive Aces have truly established themselves as the UK's top Jive & Swing band.

Together for over a decade, this extremely popular six piece group have performed at thousands of festivals, theatres and events throughout the UK, Europe and USA, as well as Japan, Israel, South Africa, Morrocco and the Caribbean, 30 countries in all. "Opening up with The Jive Aces, the energy level quickly soars through the roof as the band starts stomping with some infectious, high-speed swing music that parallels the energy of '50s rock 'n' roll with all the silk and glamour of '40s swing.

Mica Paris is one of the UK’s most respected female singers with a career full of Top 10 hit singles and albums worldwide. The range, power, and sheer soulfulness of Mica Paris' singing made an immediate impact on the UK music scene in 1988 when she released her debut, platinum-selling album, 'So Good’ from which she had her first top ten hit, 'My One Temptation'.

More worldwide hit albums and singles followed, including 'Black Angel', 'Stay' and 'Carefree,' together with collaborations with respected artists such as David Gilmour, Prince and Jools Holland, before turning her many talents to London’s

West End stage starring in Mama I Want To Sing, The Vagina Monologues and Sweet Lorraine.

In 2002 Mica extended her talents into broadcasting and presented 'The Gospel of Gospel', a TV documentary tracing the influence of gospel on American popular music with interviews with Ray Charles, BB King, Al Green, to name a few and recently presented an episode of ‘Treasures of Britain for More 4. Mica also hosted her own radio show, 'Soul Solutions' for BBC Radio 2 and with an average of a million listeners, it became the most successful soul and R&B show in the UK.

2003 saw Mica presented with the "Gold Badge Award" by the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters for her contribution to the British entertainment industry and in 2004 she was in the Top 10 list of the "100 Great Black Britons." Towards the end of that year, Mica recorded a soul album based on her BBC Radio 2 show before leaving for Australia for a series of special live performances in Sydney.

Upon her return, Mica hosted two seasons of the popular BBC 1 TV show 'What Not To Wear'. Other TV shows followed with Mica being an expert judge on Gok Wan's 'Miss Naked Beauty 2008' for Channel 4 and ITV's 'CelebAir' and is also a regular guest on ITV’s ‘This Morning’ and ‘Loose Women.’ In 2007 she wrote an empowering book 'Beautiful Within,' published by Simon and Schuster to critical acclaim and in 2015 was a popular contestant on BBC One’s Celebrity Masterchef.

Wall to Wall Stevie Wonder

Wall to Wall Stevie Wonder

Sep 13, 7:00pm - Sep 15, 11:30pm

Hideaway Streatham
2 Empire Mews, Stanthorpe Road
London,  SW16 2BF Map

Join us at Hideaway for a three night residency of pure Stevie Wonder bliss as we celebrate the man and the music, with special guest vocalists Lex Cameron and guest vocalist TBC, and Hideaway's Musical Director Janette Mason.

Hideaway celebrates one of the greatest names in soul history – from the emergence of ‘Little Stevie’ through to the reign of the ‘Master Blaster’ himself!

Diving into one of the most celebrated songbooks of any solo artist, Wall to Wall: Stevie Wonder teams Hideaway resident MD and keys maestro Janette Mason with the stunning soulful vocal talents of Lex Cameron (aka Lennox, ‘Don’t Go’/’Free’) and Mary Pearce (Lionel Richie, Grace Jones, Courtney Pine, Donna Summer and more).
Lex Cameron

Lex Cameron may on the surface be unfamiliar to all but the more astute music aficionados. Most would probably remember him from recordings he made in the early 90s under his previous moniker “Lennox”, most notably the double-A side “Don’t Go”/”Free”; two slices of sensual and conscious UK Soul respectively.

In recent times Lex can be found in the guise of Musical Director, vocalist/composer and keyboard player for none other than Mr Omar Lye-Fook on the tour circuit, as well as preparing subtly in the background for his own solo comeback.

Janette Mason - Musical Director & Piano

Even if you’ve never been to this exceptional pianist’s gigs, you’ll have heard her special touch time and again - on many albums from Ian Shaw to Robert Wyatt, live in concert with Oasis and Jimmy Somerville as well as her numerous contributions for television and soundtracks for the movies.

Janette Mason is a talented composer and arranger. She was recently commissioned to write the score for feature film, The Calling, starring Susannah York and Brenda Blethyn, contributed four arrangements to Ian Shaw’s album, Drawn to all Things, and produced and arranged Lea DeLaria’s current Warner Brothers release, The Live Smoke Sessions, which made the Grammy ballot.

As a Jazz musician, she has been a seminal figure on the British Jazz scene for the last fifteen years, sharing the stage with Mornington Lockett, Julian Siegel and many more.

At the age of 20 he moved to Europe, where he went on to release solo material, has played countless sessions and live shows as well as working as a backing vocalist for the likes of Basement Jaxx and many others.
Janette Mason - Musical Director & Piano

Janette Mason is by now a familiar face at Hideaway. She took on the role of resident Musical Director in 2012 and has been producing an eclectic array of shows from Bond to Bowie and beyond. Her skills as a composer and arranger can be heard on her 2010 Trio CD ‘Alien Left Hand’ which was nominated for a Parliamentary Jazz Award and on the soundtrack to ‘Ruby Blue’ an award winning independent film starring Bob Hoskins. As a keyboard player she has worked with Oasis, Seal, Pulp and Robert Wyatt as well as the cream of the UK’s jazz performers including Clare Martin, Ian Shaw, and Clare Teal.
