Latest update from Shambala Festival
[ad_1]
This Earth Day, we’re standing with more than 60 independent festival across the UK in our commitment to being disposable plastic free. All participating festivals have pledged to to ban the use of plastic straws on site, and to eliminate all single use plastics on site by 2021, which is a amazing step forward for the industry.
We eliminated single use drinks bottles, pint cups and straws back in 2013, but we are now determined to tackle the last few, pesky little bits of plastic at the festival – and we need your help.
✨ LISTEN UP, GLITTER JUNKIES – WE NEED TO TALK ✨
We’ve avoided this as long as we could whilst tackling the ‘bigger’ issues, but we have to accept that microplastics on our land or in our waterways or is not OK. In 2018, plastic glitter is banned at Shambala, with on-site traders using Bio-Glitter® only – but we need you to work with us, on what you bring to site. If you can not face a festival without your sparkles, stock up Bio-glitter® from a reputable source – we recommend EcoStardust, ecoglitterfun or Glitterlution Biodegradable Glitter.
💪 THE PLASTIC CHALLENGE 2018 💪
One of the last frontiers in our quest to become entirely plastic free, is working with you lot, to reduce the amount of plastic brought on to site…
1. Bring your own water bottle/drinks in metal bottles and wherever possible buy cans or be clever about what you bring to avoid plastic.
2. Plastic free periods! Due to be on your period at Shambala? There’s a brilliant factsheet on plastic-free menstrual products available here (http://bit.ly/shambalaperiods) or pop into the Red Sea Travel Agencyon site for more details on making the switch.
3. Food and drink packaging – Avoid bringing ‘convenience’ food or drink that comes with unnecessary plastic packaging – those ‘snap pots’ of baked beans are a great example of packaging gone mad – embrace the humble tin.
4. Smokers – switch to biodegradable filter tips, for your roll ups. These are easily found online.
5. Bring your own reusable cup or mug – plastic, bamboo or metal (no ceramic or glass for safety reasons please!) or, if you haven’t already, buy a beautiful Shambala Bamboo Ecoffee cup or steel water bottle in advance to pick up on arrival (or onsite from any cafe serving hot drinks while stocks last). You can pre-order yours now, under ‘Ancillary Items’ on our ticket page.
Our friends and partners at RAW Foundation have put together a Plastic Free Guide for festival goers, packed with clever ways to help you reduce the amount of plastic you bring to site and in every day life – download it for free, here: http://bit.ly/plasticfreefestivals
And finally, this year, we’re also attempting to build the festival without traditional cable ties – gulp! – wish us luck!

Michelle and Amberlea… hurrah for eco glitter! 😃
I’ve got a collection of various plastic glitters, I’m going to switch over to biodegradable, but what to do with what I have now? 🤔 glue it onto everything? 😂
Well done Shambala, keep up the leadership.
Joanna Matson *important glitter news*
Thank you Shambala! I hope the biodegradable stuff is kinder if it gets into your eyes too.
Good move. Keep leading the way, Shambala! ✨
Plastic free periods… Would love to, but it’s tricky for festivas to provide a place to discretely wash a mooncip, soap n water is necessary! In fact non-applicator tampons require better washing facilities, a squirt of gel…. Yuck! Be great to solve these problems x
Well done Shambala. Camping always makes me notice how much packaging and waste we throw away at home ( not to mention water use!). If you have to lug it across a field it makes you notice it more! We switched to bio glitter last year and we still have our festival cups ready to being back this year. Thank you for making us think about our impact on our beautiful festival site and our beautiful planet. See you in August x
Graeme Rundle see, good job I’ve ordered eco friendly med team glitter 🙂 can still be Shambala Baby Sparkly and keep within the ethos of the festival 🤩
All sounds doable.. then I got to the cable ties bit – oh my stars we are getting serious !!!! 💪💪💪
So this might be a step too far, but last year with the proliferation of gorgeous sequinned items everywhere, we noticed a whole tonne of sequins on the ground that had been shedded… Do you know if there’s a bio alternative that your traders could explore? Much love xx

Genuine question, are tin cans for food and drink a lot better for the environment? Could someone link to resources on this? Is it not possible to recycle both?
Shennandoah O’Brien Tallman another reason i wanna go to this festival
