What’s ‘Appening, Shambalans?
If you’ve read your Essential Guide email you will have seen mention of a little something we’ve been working on..
For the first time ever, Shambala has an App -and not just any App – rather than using a ‘free’ off the shelf event app, we built our own, with the expertise of a few amazing developers.

Why? Because we discovered that off the shelf event apps aren’t ‘free’ at all – you lot pay a hefty price for it, with your personal data. They harvest it. They keep it. They sell it. We want to resist (and debate) the relentless march of ‘big data’ capture and it’s effect on our world.

The App is somewhat different to the Souvenir Programme. Our programmes have all your listings, but are also packed with behind the scenes features, photography, updates on our green initiatives and plans, secrets and hot tips. We know lots of you like to have the programme as a souvenir, but don’t find it easy to carry around with you, as it’s not pocket sized.

The App however is pure, pocket-sized listings, locations and useful info. It’s totally free, totally anonymous and collects zero personal data. The app is built to work offline, and phone signal at Shambala is patchy at best, so download it and update it before you arrive and it will be cached to your phone so you won’t need signal, data or wifi to use it. It’s meant to enhance your experience, not dominate it – we totally appreciate some people see festivals as a much-needed chance to escape their smart phones!

This isn’t something we’ve done before, and is something we will keep working on, tweaking based on your feedback (you can send feedback through the app) and building on in the coming years.

Big love x

  10. Lucy, have you seen this? Handy tool. I checked the app and it doesn’t deal with what to do if you’ve booked in a campervan section but have neither a campervan or a tent. Not sure how useful this app will be for my type of queries 🤦‍♀️😂

  11. Marc Davies says:

That’s definitely a tricky one. I think someone might need to go to Go Outdoors.

  17. I’m so disappointed to see that a festival that is supported by a lot of vegans and veggies is going to be serving up ‘invasive species’! Do you realise that at this time of year, squirrels are having second litters and you will very likely be killing nursing mothers so that you can serve up ‘food’? Also, greys are not the villains they are made out to be. It’s such a shame that you have fallen for this propaganda!
Humans wiped out the native reds long before greys were introduced. We used many of the same arguments for killing them that we use against greys. We then decided that we wanted reds back so we imported Scandinavian reds to the UK. The reds we see today are descendants from those! Are you planning on serving up those as well? No, because there would be a public outcry! Once the reds began to do well, we wiped out their habitats. Unlike greys, reds cannot thrive in lots of different habitats which is why we see so little of them. The greys had nothing to do with the decline of the reds! The majority of deaths in reds now are due to being hit by cars and lack of habitat.
Also, you might want to take a look at the good that greys do for our environment. They are very good at storing food up for the winter and they eat seeds and nuts that are not in great condition and will store the good ones. They cannot always find their caches of food and once left, we get new trees growing from those stores. Greys are amazing forest regenerators.
The persecution of these amazing animals needs to stop!

  18. If you are a “green”, environmentally aware festival, please can you tell me why you will be killing grey squirrels and teaching people ways to cook them? If it is as your literature says because you consider them an “invasive” species, then your thinking is extremely out-of-touch and speciesist.. I would draw your attention to the research done by Animal Aid and other groups which demonstrates that culling of grey squirrels is not necessary to protect the red squirrels (whose main threat is humans). Please reconsider your plans to kill and eat what you term “invasive” species (grey squirrels and crayfish) and instead make yourselves a really ethical, environmentally aware event by keeping the festival vegetarian – and maybe vegan in 2018?

  19. Why is stiletto disco not on the app under venues?

  20. Please consider making your festival ethical and green by not killing and eating squirrels.

  21. JJ Maguire says:

Hi. I saw on your website that this year you are going to be having “invasive species” on sale as food.
As the human race is the most invasive species of them all can I ask if you’re also going to be having human meat on sale?

    Genuine question

    Thanks

  22. Well done you lot for considering, and deciding to develop your own app and not using our personal data. Cheers!

  23. Just wondering whether anyone could kindly let me know if I can bring perfume? It’s in glass, but small… I assume it’s okay? I did inbox you shambala but no reply.. X
