Latest update from Shambala Festival

As Pride month draws to a close, we’ve got some announcements for you – buckle up, as it’s a slightly wordy one..

๐ŸŒˆ The SanQtuary ๐ŸŒˆ
This month has been a time to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community, reclaim histories and learn better allyship within and from outside of the community. With this in mind, we are immensely proud and excited to announce a new venue debuting at Shambala this year: our all new Queer clubhouse, The SanQtuary.

Run by and for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies, it is an intersectional and intergenerational space, inspired by the ancestors. During the day get cosy by the wood burner, for some holistic healing, and tap into rich Queer heritage, through talks, workshops, meditation and a good olโ€™ brew.

As the sun begins to set, Queens & Cocktails, Shambalaโ€™s daily meet and greet, will be a chance to segue smoothly into each nightโ€™s offering of cutting-edge performance, wild dance parties and slick DJ sets. Come along, explore visions of, and play in, our own Queertopia!

๐ŸŒˆ FREEDOM FRIDAY๐ŸŒˆ
Who doesnโ€™t love a make over? Itโ€™s about time Fruity Friday slapped a little proverbial lippy on. New and improved, we want Friday to be more than just a titillating play at โ€˜cross-dressingโ€™: the gender binaryโ€™s dead now anyways! We want Friday to be the time when people have free reign to experiment with their gender expression โ€“ to be bold and open, in safe and silly, Shambolic surrounds!

โ€œFruity,โ€ the delicious cocktail of sweet plant matter, can also have pretty damning connotations. In Britain, the word has historically meant naughty, bawdy and spicy (no bad thing there!), but has also been substitute for notions of the wicked, impure and rotten. In the US โ€œfruityโ€ has subsequently been used as a homophobic slur. This etymology lesson has left us with a sour taste in our mouthsโ€ฆ perhaps itโ€™s time to do away with the word? Time to make Friday as inclusive as possible.

So, weโ€™re welcoming in FREEDOM FRIDAY โ€“ a day for ludicrous, lovely, larger-than-life gender play; a chance for people to experiment; to dress their truest or to test out the absolute opposite; to play pretend; to proclaim โ€œITโ€™S MEโ€; to revel in body positivity. We hope youโ€™ll get stuck in and embrace the name change. This is an invitation to up-the-ante, covered up, stripped down or dressed to the nines โ€“ and celebrate freedom, as we enter this next chapter in our adventures.

Big love, The Shambala Team x

This election is hugely important. It's a chance for you to have your say on the policies (not personalities) that are most important to you โ€“ whether thatโ€™s the NHS, the environment, public services or education. You must have registered to vote by midnight on November 26th.

As if having a voice in your future wasnโ€™t enough, weโ€™ve teamed up with our friends in the festival community on a joint campaign (#UseYourVoice2019) and will be giving away 2 adult tickets to Shambala Festival 2020 to one lucky person who registers to vote between Friday 15th November (today!) and midnight on 26th November, when registration closes.

2. Register to vote (itโ€™s super quick and can even be done on your phone) www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

2. Once registered, comment on this Facebook post saying โ€˜I just registered to voteโ€™ and tag at least one mate.

4. After the deadline of midnight on November 26th has passed, we will contact one of you as our winner. To accept the prize, you will need to forward us your confirmation email to show you did register to vote during the specified time period. If you missed Wiyaala's performance with K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade at Barrio Afrika this year and haven't been able to forgive yourself, fear not, the video folks at Trago Studio captured the whole set for you. Behold, the coolest woman on the planet.

Sound and mixing by Pete Not Bombs.
