Latest Festival Flyer update from Greenbelt

JP Bimeni is a royal refugee turned classic soul singer with a remarkable story of resistance, having fled Burundi’s civil war after three attempts on his life, he landed in Wales as a teenager. Today, his songs of love and loss, hope and fear are sung with a conviction that comes from his extraordinary life experiences. “When I sing, I feel like I’m cleansing myself: music is a way for me to forget. You can’t entertain the pain of your problems all the time – you have to put them away and let something else fill the space.” His relentless positivity is an inspiration to us all.
Greenbelt, give it up for JP Bimeni.

Greenbelt Festival

Back on 18th June, we had the privilege of hosting a transatlantic conversation with black Christians from the UK and US on the church’s complicity in racial injustice. It was an amazing conversation, hosted by Greenbelt trustee, Chine McDonald, together with Anthony G Reddie, Selina Stone, Jemar Tisby & Danté Stewart.

We learned such a lot and still have so much more to learn, change and do. We’re sharing the stream again today, along with a resources sheet of books, people, causes and organisations that the panellists referenced in the conversation that we’ve put together so you can take things deeper and follow the threads.

Watch the stream below. Download the resources here: bit.ly/gbresource-blm

We've got a very special Rising show on Tuesday 7th July. Our friend @martynjosephwales is welcoming the brilliant @crysmatthewsmusic onto his show and... We. Cannot. Wait. Jokingly referring to herself – the black lesbian daughter of a preacher – as "the poster child for intersectionality", Crys is the real deal.

Bringing us her Stateside stew of Americana, folk, jazz, blues, bluegrass and funk, it promises to be a really special show, so we hope you'll join Martyn and us at 8pm on our YouTube and Facebook channels to welcome her to Greenbelt, #WildAtHome🌱.

To get a feel for her music, check out Crys tearing up We Must Be Free (youtu.be/T45NF6DT6Zs), accompanied by the wondrous sound of the Congressional Chorus, or her Battle Hymn for an Army of Lovers (youtu.be/8ACy_xH94Ao).

As talk of Annexation builds, throwing the idea of a two-state solution into even more disarray, we thought it would be good to revisit the urgent words from Palestinian community leader and activist Sami Awad, speaking at last year’s sun-baked Greenbelt 2019.

While the occupation of Palestinians continues and their suffering seems to have no end, Sami asks: what’s next? Where are we going and what can each of us do to work towards a new vision of peace and justice in the so-called ‘Holy Land’?

From a Palestinian refugee family, Sami Awad is an internationally-acclaimed speaker and executive director of the Holy Land Trust in the West Bank Town of Bethlehem.

Here's the mighty Brass Against tearing the roof off last year on our main stage. They're everything that's brilliant about live music. But the whole industry is at risk. Let's hope the government is listening. #letthemusicplay ... See MoreSee Less
