Cambridge Folk Festival news: The Den Presents:Ben Smith,Jimmy Brewer,Ethan Ash & Sarah Munro

Latest update from Cambridge Folk Festival

Part of City Roots 2018

After the resounding success of last year’s first ever City Roots Festival, the event is set to return once more. Injecting the city with winter cheer and the spirit of Cambridge Folk Festival this February and March, Cambridge’s second city-wide winter folk and roots festival opens for an extended two weeks of exceptional music and events.

The Folk Festival’s legendary talent spotting stage, The Den has put together two gigs each featuring three acts.

At Storey’s Field Centre, Eddington on Thur 1 March:

Ben Smith & Jimmy Brewer – a close harmony singing, guitar playing duo fast gaining a reputation not only as great songwriters but also superb musicians.

Ethan Ash – with his ‘soul-infused folk pop (with a dash of country)’ he’s supported many artists including Ed Sheeran on one of his sell-out UK tours; has written with Grammy award winning songwriter Amy Wadge, and has played many high profile festivals and gigs.

Sarah Munro – a singer-songwriter and guitarist whose music combines elements of folk, jazz and easy-listening with a strong emphasis on lyrics and storytelling.

Next up in the Folk Festival spotlight is our brilliant Car Parks Section Head Anna Brooks Taylor. Anna has been working at the festival since 2011!

I have a large team for the car parks and have had some great staff over the years, indeed some have stayed with me for many years.

Some staff really do go above and beyond the call of duty in trying to help customers. Last year (2019) one of my staff retrieved a customer’s phone out of a full porta loo…….(all in the name of customer service)!

We would like to introduce you to Victoria Smith! Victoria is a local nature reserve manager.

We reached out to Victoria and asked if she would share some stories with us from her work on both Coldhams Common and Cherry Hinton Hall. Victoria kindly responded with a wealth of wonderful information and images, which we are very excited to be able to share with you over the coming weeks.

Probably the highlight of Coldham’s common for me is the chalk grassland, this type of grassland is a nationally scare habitat therefore we are particularly lucky to have one on this most urban of sites. This boasts some beautiful plants which are specialist of this type of habitat and consequently not ones you would see every day. Species such as Spiny Rest harrow, Common Knapweed, Ribbed Melliot, Bird’s Foot trefoil, Agrimony, Wild Marjoram and Yarrow to name a few! The presence of these plants also attracts chalk grassland specialist, for example the Marbled White butterfly which has become quite a common sight on the common in and around July. We manage these grasslands mainly with the help of our Conservation Volunteers which is my group of dedicated helpers who meet every week.

Find out more about our local nature reserves here >>> lnr.cambridge.gov.uk
