It gives us great pleasure to share our second staff highlights post. Meet Keith Day! Keith has been a compere at the festival since 1975!

Keith gave us so many wonderful stories, but we chose this little gem. The compere became the performer!

At the 25th CFF, there was to be a huge on stage jam session to close the festival featuring many of the artists. Isaac Guillory was the musical director. At 4 o’clock on the day I was called up and told I was to play bass for the session, with no time to rehearse. Thus I shared the stage with the likes of Martin Carthy, Roy Harper, Ralph McTell - the great and the good of Folk Music. It transpired that Martin was due to lead us in “Will the Circle be Unbroken”, and he could not remember verse 3 so I sang it. Sadly the crew did not pick it up, so the mike went live on the 3rd line.

2 more photos from that night - hanging on my music room wall framed, hence the reflections. The set list was taped to the bass - there were 2 copies. Isaac had one large on the floor, and I had one on the bass.

From the same year, Ralph Ken and Joan.

These pictures are wonderful thank you😊

Here is the event itself. Can you identify the 4 people in the background?

Sylv, Ken and Shirley backstage.

I was there.

Hi Keith! Doesn't beat the time you played the Club Tent with The HayDays though, does it! 😁

📣 Eddie’s lockdown tune of the day

Today’s Lockdown Track. Anyone remember the compere’s warning, between Joan Baez and Marytn Bennet? “Those of a weak disposition might want to move to the back”. Here’s the brilliant piper and composer, channelling his inner Prodigy. Those representing him took a lot of convincing that this would work at Cambridge, but in the end, it was a triumph. Nae regrets. A beautiful and hugely talented man, he was lost too early.

This was sadly before my time at Cambridge. However, I only discovered Bennett recently, and it was still all thanks to Cambridge. I was blown away by Niteworks at 2017’s festival, and when looking up their music my streaming service said ‘you might also like...’ Bennett and boom! Grit in particular has parachuted into my top 10 albums of all time, and I still listen to him regularly now. Can only imagine what he would have been like live. Such a tragic loss

Great night ! Very true lost too early

I remember his performance well, wasn't it last set of the festival ?

📣 Eddie’s lockdown tune of the day

Today’s Lockdown Track. This year, Suzanne Vega was due to return to Cambridge, for the first time since 2001. We’ll have to wait, but in the meantime, here’s an acoustic version of the classic Luka, which is also closest to how she is currently performing live and all the better to appreciate her lyrics.

Will she be at CFF2021 now? Really really hope so😊 Are you trying to get the full lineup to roll over to next year🤔

So disappointed that I won’t be seeing Suzanne Vega at CFF this year

📣 Eddie’s lockdown tune of the day

Today’s Lockdown Track. Looking for suggestions for your favourite protest songs please? Folk music’s always gone hand in hand with social justice, so there should be rich pickings. Billy Bragg? June Tabor? The Young’uns? Grace Petrie? Kicking off with this blast from the past; Cambridge favourites Show of Hands.

Vin Garbutt - the Chemical Workers Song

Buffy Sainte Marie- Universal Soldier Buffy performed a fantastic set at CFF2009😁

Show of Hands are always great aren’t they? Nice people too😁

Great song and sadly now appears to be timeless

Show of Hands😁🙂😀 my favourites.

Very appropriate!

Great song, and a great session in 2010. Unfortunately the song's message is now timeless.

Love this song

Can you sing it??
