BELLADRUM FLAGS UP OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREATIVE YOUNG PEOPLE

Award-winning, family friendly Belladrum Festival has announced a new area at this year’s festival which runs 2 – 4 August, especially for young people. Otherland will be part of the national Year of Young People celebrations, supported by Event Scotland. The Belladrum team have spent the last couple of months working with young people from all over the Highlands to co-design the new space which will create an alternative world where youthful imagination is indulged and enabled to run as free as possible.

Now the Festival organisers want to invite Highland youth groups to make sure they are represented at Otherland.

Lindsay Dunbar, Otherland Manager, explained “Working with young people during co-design workshops has been really inspiring. They said Otherland should be representative of young people from all over the Highlands. The message was every young person should know they belong there and the banners would be a great way to say this. We are looking for youth clubs, groups and teams to design a unique banner to be displayed on the Otherland walls.”

In addition to banners, young people are being invited to design the centrepiece for the new festival-within-a-festival – the Otherland totem idea grew out of the workshops, and the Belladrum team think it’s a great idea.

Festival Founder, Joe Gibbs said “Otherland is shaping up to be an exciting new addition to Belladrum this year. But now we need you to get involved and help bring this new festival within a festival to life”

The winning design will be selected by the Belladrum team, and young people will be invited to be involved in the creation of the structure which will be the focal point for the Otherland area and celebrate young Highlanders.

The Year of Young People is the latest Scottish Government themed-year, led by Event Scotland, and an chance for generations to come together and celebrate Scotland’s young people. Young people aged 8 to 26 will be given a stronger voice on issues which affect their lives, showcase their ideas and talents. Ultimately, the Year of Young People aims to challenge status quo and create a more positive perception of them in society.

Any groups wanting to get involved in producing a banner design or entering a totem design should get in touch with Lindsay for more details on otherland2018@gmail.com. The closing date for banner and totem designs will be 31 May.

Out of interest, was it quiet? We were in quiet zone and it was fantastic and also super clean. My boyfriend is keen to book cleanfields for next year but I like my zzz

We camped in the quiet section and cleaned up after and I seen a lot more folk doing so it's really not hard to do so 😁

All the campsite should look like this by the end! Xxx

Young people at a music festival. Shocking. Whatever next? FFS guys come on.

We camped in family and when we left on Sunday it was also pretty spotless, everyone cleaned up after themselves very well x

Going to have to be 2019 the year I get to Belladrum.

Clean fields should be expanded, slowly but surely it would be better to get all to sign up to this. It shouldn't be a given that people leave their rubbish and items they no longer want for someone else to deal with let's have a cultural change.

We had clean fields tickets, but couldn't get in as it was full. We camped in general and still tidied up after ourselves...the whole festival should be like this.

I think this should be the whole site, and those who wish to sit in their own waste should pay extra...

We camped in general for 4 years, always tidied up, even had bnliners with us to put all our rubbish in. Security even commented how tidy our pitch was. Usually 10 of us. No need for the mess. Even with those around us that were disgusting, we never left a thing.

How sad you need to have designated areas for responsible people, it should be a given that you leave as you find 😞

Gail Beveridge , what's your thoughts on this, can you remember where this was?

Why not make it bigger then so more of us can camp there away from the greater and greater numbers of the 'young team' that you are allowing into the family area each year.

Definately expand this area . I was totally disgusted walking through general camping with my grandchild who kept commenting on why people were leaving their rubbish . The children were even collecting plastic cups down at garden stage and piling it up , they are far more aware than the adults!

All areas should look like this. My party always camp in 'Family' and we leave our area spotless. General is always a disgrace!! However, I can't help thinking there'd be far less clearing up to do all round at the end if refuse areas and waterpoints were continually emptied/cleared over the course of the weekend rather than just letting everything pile up until Sunday x

It was such a fantastic place to camp - I can see our little pitch in the photo! Walking back through the mess left in the other campsite made us appreciate it all the more!

We loved the clean fields but far to many tents were squeezed in , supposed to be 1 meter between tents , it was more like 6 inches, not safe

2nd time in here and absolutely love it!! Agree that it should be expanded - might also be an idea to encourage the 'younger generation' to clean up after themselves too after witnessing some not so nice behaviour in some area's

All fields should be clean. Bins should be available. I go to Eden and its mainly young folk and the place is spotless. Leaving to make a mess will just be the downfall of bella. T in park became like beruit in the end

i would love to see the same picture from General hahaha

We will defo go clean fields next year and fingers crossed the eventually make the whole festival this way.

Troy Connor wonder how general looked😂

Great will definitely want a space here for next year. Also think it should be rolled out further. Makes for a much pleasenter experience all round 😊

It was a fab defo go back next year, only downside tents too close to each other as not enough space for the amount of wristbands issued.

Definitely should be bigger as lots of us in family/quiet camping wanted to be there 🙁 filled up too quick 🙁
