BELLADRUM FLAGS UP OPPORTUNITIES FOR CREATIVE YOUNG PEOPLE
Award-winning, family friendly Belladrum Festival has announced a new area at this year’s festival which runs 2 – 4 August, especially for young people. Otherland will be part of the national Year of Young People celebrations, supported by Event Scotland. The Belladrum team have spent the last couple of months working with young people from all over the Highlands to co-design the new space which will create an alternative world where youthful imagination is indulged and enabled to run as free as possible.
Now the Festival organisers want to invite Highland youth groups to make sure they are represented at Otherland.
Lindsay Dunbar, Otherland Manager, explained “Working with young people during co-design workshops has been really inspiring. They said Otherland should be representative of young people from all over the Highlands. The message was every young person should know they belong there and the banners would be a great way to say this. We are looking for youth clubs, groups and teams to design a unique banner to be displayed on the Otherland walls.”
In addition to banners, young people are being invited to design the centrepiece for the new festival-within-a-festival – the Otherland totem idea grew out of the workshops, and the Belladrum team think it’s a great idea.
Festival Founder, Joe Gibbs said “Otherland is shaping up to be an exciting new addition to Belladrum this year. But now we need you to get involved and help bring this new festival within a festival to life”
The winning design will be selected by the Belladrum team, and young people will be invited to be involved in the creation of the structure which will be the focal point for the Otherland area and celebrate young Highlanders.
The Year of Young People is the latest Scottish Government themed-year, led by Event Scotland, and an chance for generations to come together and celebrate Scotland’s young people. Young people aged 8 to 26 will be given a stronger voice on issues which affect their lives, showcase their ideas and talents. Ultimately, the Year of Young People aims to challenge status quo and create a more positive perception of them in society.
Any groups wanting to get involved in producing a banner design or entering a totem design should get in touch with Lindsay for more details on email@example.com. The closing date for banner and totem designs will be 31 May.
