Do you know a child who has trouble communicating? Maybe they have a diagnosed disorder such as Downs Syndrome, or maybe their speech is just a bit unclear or delayed? Do you find yourself wishing you could help them to communicate?!

Makaton is a communication system using signs, symbols, and speech, and has a long history of helping children and adults with a variety of communication difficulties to interact with those around them.

This course covers Stage 1-4 of the Makaton Core Vocabulary, giving you about 200 signs and symbols. It’s very practical, so you’ll get lots of opportunities to have a go at signing as well as learning about Makaton itself.

We are limiting numbers on these courses to a maximum of SIX people – this means that our tutor is able to spend more time with each participant, making sure they feel confident with the signing. The cost includes two participant manuals with signs and symbol drawings.

This is a two day course, so we have provided a variety of date and time combinations: either two full days (either consecutive days or separated by a week), or four morning sessions.

Tues 3rd – Weds 4th October — 9.30am-4pm.
Cost: £135 including lunch

Thurs 26th – Fri 27th October — 9.30am-4pm.
Cost: £135 including lunch

Tues 5th & Tues 12th December — 9.30am-4pm.
Cost: £135 including lunch
*Please note this is two Tuesday sessions, not consecutive days*

Tues 9th, 16th, 23rd, & 30th January — 10am-12.30pm.

*Please note these are consecutive Tuesday morning sessions and don’t include lunch*

Why is a folk music organisation teaching Makaton?!

Folk Arts Oxford believe the arts should be accessible for everyone, and are very proud to host the first Makaton-friendly festival in the UK. We are holding these workshops as part of our commitment to improving access to our events for people with disabilities.
