The London Intl Ska Festival celebrates it’s 30th anniversary next Easter (29 March – 1 April 2018), with a phenomenal line up of all things ska, rocksteady, reggae, dub, 2 tone and beyond.
Day 1 see’s a world exclusive Studio One special featuring legendary names from one of Jamaica’s greatest labels;
Formed in 1963 by Ernest Wilson and Peter Austin, in the Clarendon Parish of Jamaica, The Clarendonians recorded their debut single A Day Will Come for Leslie Kong and Federal Records, before coming to the attention of Studio One boss and producer Clement Dodd. While they were still in their early teens they recorded a series of chart-topping Jamaican singles for Studio One including; Rudie Gone a Jail, Sho Be Do Be, Rudie Bam Bam, You Can’t Be Happy, Darling Forever and You Can’t Keep a Good Man Down. Dodd expanded the group to a trio with the addition of a seven-year-old Freddie McGregor (who had to stand on a crate to reach the microphone). In the late ‘60s Austin, Wilson and MacGregor went they’re separate ways, with the later becoming one of the biggest names in reggae.
Widely regarded as the ‘Queen of Jamaican Ska’, Doreen Shaffer is one of the greatest female voices from Jamaica. She launched her career with a debut single Adorable You in 1964 for Studio One, where she also voiced numerous songs for the world’s original ska band The Skatalites, who she has continued to tour the world with to this present day. Her beautiful lushes voice also found her recording many duets with some of the islands best male singers; Jackie Opel, Slim Smith, Johnny Clarke and Lloyd Charmers.
Born January 28, 1946 in Kingston, Gayle, singer, songwriter and veteran Studio One artiste, began his musical career as a vocalist with Byron Lee and the Dragonaires. While he continued to perform as part of the Dragonaires, Gayle also recorded a series of solo hits, notably a covers version of I’ll Be Around and Lady for Clement ‘Sir Coxson’ Dodd at Studio One, marking him as one of Jamaica’s standout singers. This is a super rare opportunity to see Mr. Gayle.
The Jamaican born, Studio One signed, singer supreme Alpheus makes his UK debut! Alpheus was discovered by Tony Brevett of the famed vocal rocksteady group ‘The Melodians’ who introduced him to legendary Clement Dodd at Studio One in New York in 1997, where he recorded his debut album Quality Time. Following years of touring USA and playing most major festival on the European continent Alpheus teamed up with producer Roberto Sanchez. Their collaboration has produced a trilogy of beautifully authentic ska, rocksteady and early reggae albums. The third of which will be out in Spring 2018 on Liquidator Records.
